What inspired this song?

Hey,

Does anyone know why they made that single in the 80s "We are the World." I can't remember and it is pissing me off.

I think it had to do with Africa but what was the actual cause.

I think it was to raise money for aids research, could be wrong though.

It was done to raise money for famine relief in Africa, particularly in Ethopia, where a drought, and government ineptness and corruption served to damn millions to starvation.
