What input device do you use when playing Half Life?

When Half Life first came out, I used a MS Sidewinder Pro and loved it.

But then I switched to a MS Sidewinder Precision 2 (USB) and find it hard to control.

I've tried keyboard and mouse and found it frustrating.

What do you use?

Mouse + KB is the way to go. Setup for a WSAD key config and it'll become second nature. I used to play with the 10key (cause my first keyboard didn't have the arrows), then I moved to the arrows when I needed the 10key for some game. I think part of the reason I suck so bad in FPS' is cause I used those damn arrows up to q3a :eek:

MrBond is right, the mouse+WASD setup is funky at first if you're not used to it, but it absolutely the way to go. You just can't snap shots off left/right/up/down quickly and accurately with a sidewinder. Plus you have a hand on the keyboard for weap changes/voice binds/etc. Play through halflife or something on easy with the M/K setup and just deal with the learning curve, you'll be glad you did. When I first started playing Q2 deathmatch online, I couldn't figure out why I was so terrible until I learned to use this setup (I used to be an all-keyboard guy). Be patient and good luck.

Mouse/keyboard = only way to play a FPS

Want funky? My FPS setup

Mouse 2 = forward
Mouse 3 = Backwards
Mouse 1 = Fire
Mouse 4 = +use (also ENTER)
Scroll = weapon select

S = Strafe left
D = Strafe right
a = jump
c = crouch
Space = zoom

I use a mouse and joystick. The joystick is for moving, then the hat switch is for jumping/crouching and strafing. Other switches are for firing, reload, next/previous weapons, flashlight, use, etc. I have everything right there on my joystick, then switch the mouse to my left hand and use it to look up/down and around. That hat switch makes a running jump/crouch real easy.
