When an XP pro OS connects to MS servers during installation or to check for updates, does it identify itself individually? What can MS know about me and my machine?

I run an XP pro OS, distributed by a large organization with the same activation key to all users. Does MS know more about private users, who get individual keys, than about users of such licenses? I am wondering whether under these circumstances, all users using the same key, Microsoft can still identify individual users and get information on their machines, or on the number of machines using that same key etc.

I could not find any information on that on the MS website.

As far as I can figure out:
Update downloads an applet that checks for anthentification and then polls you machine for Programs/components.
The applet then calls for the proper updates to be downloaded.

What records MS keeps, if any, I don't know.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge will chime in.

Yes it is, I am just wondering what information is being passed to Microsoft by it and by other versions of Windows, and what kind of tracking Microsoft may be doing through the license verification and update procedures.

Dear okalex,

We have been monitoring your computer running XP pro. We will be at your front door in 5 minutes. Please come with us without making a scene. We need to "discuss" some details of your private life.

Sincerely,

Microsoft Privacy Panel (we wear black suits)

....j/k, of course - Billb2 is correct. Authentication, security and software update info are the likely reasons. Remember, in the EULA you don't own the software, you're only granted a license to use it and you must agree to MS terms re enforcing the agreement, which includes periodic checks on their part.

What info gets sent?

Microsoft's got your bank account information, your DMV transactions, your social security number, your mother's maiden name, your pornographic tastes, your embarrassing google searches, your illegal music/video collection, and that one picture of your girlfriend where she shows a nipple.

For those who are wondering, I only use Reynolds Heavy Duty.

For Windows Update: OS version number, IE version number and "version numbers of other software for which Windows Update provides updates (read all as what they update has changed over time)" along with plug and play ID numbers and regional settings.
