what information to include in a letter to close a bank account

Man I really am no good at this personal finances stuff.

I moved from switzerland back to the states, but left my bank account open to catch my last paycheck. Now I'd like to close it.

I thought I remembered hearing they need it in writing, and it would be a big pain to call anyway since they're open from like 8-12 in the morning their time.

So what information should I include or not include in the letter.

To identify myself I obviously need my name, do they need my passport number or something to prove it's me?

And for them to transfer the remaining balance, do I just write the routing number and account number of my american bank in the letter, or is it safer to have them just cut me a check that they send to my address?

If you want the bank to close an account and send the money to a different address than they have on record, you're going to have trouble. How could they possibly be sure you are the account owner?

I guess you could send them the letter and wait for them to reply with the specific instructions they want you to follow.

just move all the money out. after a few months of no activity with a zero balance, they'll close it themselves.

sorry if this is a really stupid question but... how?

(p.s. it's a savings account)

It's a two part step, first transfer funds to yourself then CLOSE it.

Write yourself a check

Call then fax them requesting an outgoing international wire transfer in USD

Did they give you an ATM/debit card (hopefully it's compatible with our networks)?

I've got an ATM card that's compatible but I'm assuming has a daily limit so it would cost a good chunk to transfer by withdrawing/depositing.

Since it's a savings account, you figure my best bet is to just stay up real late tonight and talk to them on the phone?
