What information do I need?

A friend has a Dell computer 4500 with a PIII and windows ME. He wants to install Win 2000 on it. I assume that I will have to get audio and video drivers from someplace, and that the ones on his Dell disk probably won't work. What do I have to know about his computer to get the correct drivers? Will I have to get into his computer to find out what motherboard he has, or is there a better way? I have some time and probably will be back with more questions but I would like to provide enough information so that someone could help me. Thanks for your previous help and would appreciate any help that you could give me in this matter. Lynn

Your best bet would be to use the PC's TAG number on the Dell website.
It will tell you what is in the system and you can go from there.

Most likely the Video is a TNT2 card, and the Audio a Turtle Beach Montego,
with a Intel motherboard and chipset.

You can also check the Device Manager in WinME to make sure what devices
are actually present in the system.

Also, if the BIOS has not been updated since the purchase, you will need to
update that also to work correctly with Win2k.

Dell also has a utility that can tell you what's on that computer, but you have to visit the Dell site from that computer. You can also use Belarc to detect the hardware, but it will only detect hardware that has the drivers installed for it.

Like LilithTech said, you can also go to the Dell site with the service tag and it will show you the downloads for that computer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I don't know why I didn't think of the device manager. However the other ideas about the dell site, I never would have known about. Thanks again. Lynn
