What in the heck is up with the Car Makers these days??? (Proof with pictures!)

I just looked in the paper today (sunday edition) and happened to glance at the front page of the Classified auto section and some moron dealership around here is already selling brand new 2004 model year Pontiac Grand Prix GT1's for sale!! WTH?? I thought it was illegal for a car company or dealer to sell the next years model before September 1st??

Are they allowed to take orders for the 2004's already, or are dealers actually selling them by now? If that's true, that technically makes them a 2003 model car, and in no way a 2004!! What is the big deal here?? Anyone know?

EDIT: Ok, so nobody thinks I'm lying about this, Snapshot of the car ad I was talking about.

Prolly some cheezy model. I HATE car company's. It took them 15 years just to get a fvcking metal bar in the door for protection agaisnt side impacts.

It's stupid but you can already buy 2004 Maximas as well. They just appeared locally.

I think if a car was made in freaking 2003 it's a freaking 2003 car. And I think if I get a magazine in freaking March it's a freaking March 2003 mag, not bloody well may 2003. DAMNIT

I can't remember the month/year but Car and Driver once had an article on model years and, if memory serves, they found a way a manufacturer could technically sell, say, a 2004 model car in Dec. of 2002. Wish I could remember the logic behind it....

illegal? wth are you talking about. i know the 2003 model of my car was for sale in april 2002.

That is not a for sale ad, it is an announcment. They are announcing that the 04' model can be seen at said dealership and the the starting price is X ammount. It doesn't say it is for sale though.
