What if you got sued for millions?

My dad was almost sued for nearly a million dollars when I was a child. He installed a propane part on a BBQ and later was informed that it malfunctioned and caused their entire house to burn down. Of course, they couldn't prove whether it wasn't installed properly or if the part was simply defective or if something simply landed inside the BBQ and caught fire. Either way, the main problem was that the couple who owned the BBQ left it on while cooking some food and left the house for over an hour.

Luckily (and obviously), they threw the case out. But it was still scary especially considering we were barely making ends meet as a child.

Give/throw away all my possessions (most would go to family), quit my job, declare bankruptcy, close my accounts, and give the RIAA BOTH middle fingers..... that's right, I said both!

just don't pay

the US doesn't have debtors prison

you can't go to jail just for oweing someone money and not paying them

Actually you can. Try not paying child support and see if they don't put you in jail.

not the same thing as Rage187 said

O.J. lost the civil case and hasn't paid $0.01 to the Goldman's

this is because he has "no assets" , so they can't garnish anything or put leins on anything, since he doesn't own anything

if you sue someone in a civil court and win, your means of collecting are limited, wage garnishments can only be 10% (i think something small like that and often times people that lose end up in the underground where they only work under the table, so you can't garnish them anyway) or leins on property. if they don't own anything, then you can't put a lein on it. you can get some or all of their liquid bank assets, i am not sure. but if they are poor/have not bank assets, then you are SOL

I would laugh, then I would claim my wireless was unsecured and then they would have to prove it was me, if this is a civil suit then I should have time to destroy my hard disks. Then I might win, if I lose then declare bankruptcy and go on with my life.

yeah, destruction of evidence is really great. that never hurt anyone.

i don't think the unsecured wireless defense is going to work forever. they might show that you're computer savvy based on the amount of equipment you have, whether you have a home built, etc. or the court might say that you were reckless in doing so and don't deserve the protection of a defense.

How are they going to know you destroyed anything since it didn't exist in the first place?
