What if the 8800GTX gets replaced with the 9800GTX six months later.
Would you still buy the 8800?

Nothing has come out that my 6600GT can't handle at 1280x1024 with 2xAA/2xAF. I'm still playing the waiting game until I need something more powerful.

I agree there, my 6600 GT did the same.

FEAR just pissed me off taking my framerate so low though :D

It was "playable" but I wanted 60+ FPS at 1280x960 @ 4xAA 16xAF

The thing is, apparently ATI will release R580 fairly soon, too (to compete with any 90nm G70 update), and both ATI and nV should have DX10 GPUs (R600 and G80) around Vista's launch. So, potentially two new high-end GPUs from both ATI and NV b/w now and Vista's release (1-2yrs?).

Noooo! Not "teh Vista pwnage!" ;)

Kidding aside, 5 months is a long time, in general people should buy for their current needs as better stuff is always right around the corner to help bankrupt us in our never ending quest for the perfect video card.

I'm so glad that 10x7 and no AA/AF is good for me :D Some people are just picky...but thats ok.

still, i wouldnt buy any new card because my 6600gt does what i want. plus i wouldnt be able to afford it.

aka anything nvidia makes ^^^

i don't see a point in buying into this generation for my new build...nothing is significantly better (midrange 6600gt vs high end 9800 pro. this didn't happen this generation) i think i'll buy a cheap x800 vanilla to play most games a 1280x1024 with some eye candy and invest on a better midrange card a year or 2 from now- 8800 :)

I think we should steer clear of speculation games...There is something always around the corner...I tell ppl not to play th ewaiting game in cpus unless we are confirmed weeks away from new launch or price drops...howevere I never would tell someone to wait for 5 month period....

Buy what you need now...everything will be obsolete in no time, anyways...

My 6800NU with unlocked vertex pipe and clocked higher will last me for awhile.....I may look at an ATi AIW card perhaps if the features are rich....I have to admit I may be partial with Nvidia as long as they are dominant versus ATi in opengl and CAD apps...I can easily soft quadro a card at the moment and that is nice...

FEAR just plain pissed me off.

I was expecting it to be a decent game, not a parade of cliches, predictability, and lame game concepts designed to allow cheap scares. The Anti-Doom 3. Unfortunately...

Keeping the 6800GT until Nvidia releases their card with unified shaders. Geforce 8 I'm guessing. Or if I cant push my favorite games at 1600x1200 (1680x1050 widescreen in my case).

Battlefield 2, Quake 4 and Quake Wars are all that are on my radar.. and my trusty NV card does great in those D3 engine games (which I prefer anyway). Does fine in BF2 as well, but will prob stop playing that once QW comes out.

I actually found the FEAR demo very cool and fun. Sure the 'scare' parts were a bit obvious, but the atmosphere was excellent (sound cues were very good on 5.1). The (directly ripped from Max Payne) slow-mo mode is an effective gameplay enhancer for your (directly ripped from Halo) generic, uberpowerful suit-wearing (directly ripped from Silent Hill) psychically tormented hero.

I'm looking forward to the game, and I already think it seems much more fun than the 30-minutes of cool, 4 hours of snoozefest repetitiveness Doom3.

What if a company that called itself AviTIa came out and made a card that blew all of them out of the water, would you still buy it?

The 6800gt is going to be pushed down to 12x10 resolutions, once the new fall games come out.

Im going to have to upgrade my whole system if I want to continue gaming at 16x12, which I don't want to have to do. So I may wait it out 5 months.

why put this crap on two forums :/

Maybe he put it on more forums. :D

BTW, it might more than 7 months away. But I'm waiting for benchmarks on UT2007 before I do ANYTHING. Heheh. ;)

Anybody have any idea if the next generation video cards will ONLY work with Vista? Because if that's the case, I might buy a 7800 GTX next year and never upgrade again...?

If I was about to bring a 6800GT to its knees at those resolutions in games that have been out for a while, I'm pretty sure you can with a 6600GT. :p
