Actually, had they made it their chief objective and properly concentrated their forces, the Japanese probably could have taken Hawaii.

This would have effectively cut off everything westward, which they then could have conquered at their leisure. Good thing they sucked at planning ahead.

I think it was more along the lines of they didn't realize how successful their strike on Pear Harbor would be. If it had been followed up by an invasion force things would have been much more....interesting

In the game? It's pretty easy. The AI is not that great with fleets. You just need one fleet with a couple of CVs in it to keep them off the invasion fleets back for a couple of hours. (I start planning my German navy in 1936). The same two fleets you use to invade England will work (which usually = Fleet 1:2CVs, 1CVL, 6 CLs. Fleet 2: 2BB 6 HC 4CL 4DD 12TP. You'll need air cover for the England invasion so your CAGs dont die but thats pretty easy with all the airbases in N Europe)

Besides - if you do it my way you don't really have to face the US fleet. Just a couple of fishing boats with pistols (Otherwise known as the Canadian Navy)

not talking about the game.

You expect Canadians to put up any resistance? The US would be too busy being isolationist to intervene.

Canada was in the war long before the US was.
wiki paste

The Second World War[1] officially began on September 1, 1939, with the German invasion of Poland. Britain and France declared war on the Nazi Third Reich on September 3, 1939. Seven days later, on September 10, 1939, the Parliament of Canada likewise declared war on Germany, the country's first independent declaration of war[2] and the beginning of Canada's participation in the largest combined national effort in its history. By war's end, 1 million citizens would have served in military uniform, and Canada would possess the fourth largest air force and third largest surface fleet in the world.[3]

From what I understand, the Germans were going to take everything east of the Mississippi and the Japanese got everything west.

not talking about the game.

:hmm: Then your post confuses me. I said it would be near impossible for them to do it and you said 'lulz invade north america, with what?'

:hmm: on third and fourth run through perhaps it was not realized my first line was in reference to the game?

What would they have seriously done once they had taken hawaii? Taking Hawaii wasn't central to the Japanese war objectives. The Japanese where lucky to get a naval carrier force into position to launch a suprise attack on Hawaii, this force could steam at high speed 30+ knots to get in and out of land based airpower range before the US could react. A amphibious convoy steaming at 10-12 knots wouldn't have stood a chance.

Anyway this website discusses more in detail about the possibilities of taking Hawaii. Basically Japan lost WW2 when it decided to attack the US and the Allied powers. Nazi Germany sealed its fate 4 days later when it declared war on the US.
