What if it's a tie?

We all know that the electoral college elects our next president, right? Well, what if there was a tie between the two candidates? Would the popular vote then have any meaning, or would some other entity be the decision maker?

I believe the Senate chooses the president and the House chooses the vice president. There could therefore be a Bush-Lieberman or Gore-Cheney combo.

The popular vote doesn't end up deciding anything. This is how the Constitution was set up, because back then the founding fathers thought people didn't have enough information or could be too easily influenced by local government to be trusted with the final decision.

I thought it was the house picks the president, since it is considered to be closer to the people. The senate picks the vp because he's president of the senate.

That kind of tie has happened three times in history. The electorial college winner has always been elected.

<< If no presidential candidate wins a majority of electoral votes, the 12th Amendment to the Constitution provides for the presidential election to be decided by the House of Representatives. The House would select the President by majority vote, choosing from the three candidates who received the greatest number of electoral votes. And supposedly if the house is a tie, the states get to vote. If they're a tie, then it's speaker of the house...Dennis Haskert (sp?) I belive if the Republicans keep control, or Gephart if the Dems take over.

If there is a 269-269 in the electoral college, it goes to a vote in January. If that were the case, each state gets one vote. The votes are decided by the state houses and senates. Ironically, if this were the case, Texas would end up giving its vote to Gore.
