What if instead of going to Verizon, the iPhone went to Sprint?

Yeah, I know another iPhone carrier thread, but it's something the analysts haven't even considered...

Follow the logic...

1.) Apple is gearing up to release a CDMA iPhone
2.) Verizon turned down the iPhone once already
3.) Jobs if nothing else has a pretty massive ego (I'm not saying he shouldn't have one, but he does, He likely holds a grudge against Verizon)
4.) Apple loves to leverage carriers that will negotiate with them, They could get a better deal from Sprint.
5.) Verizon hates to leave phones alone, likely they're demanding their own app store from Apple or a cut of the app sales from any iPhone on Verizon's network.

I dunno, I like to think out loud sometimes...

I would think going to tmo would be the best. No HW change and would really put tmo on the map. but that aint gonna happen.

LOL, that's my F/U, I think they'll release on TMobile as well.

Once again, a carrier that they can leverage pretty effectively...

Would definitely be the easiest. And generate some coins for T Mobile. Doubt it'll happen any time soon, though, you can always jail break.

You'd need a radio change to support T-Mobile's 3G.

1.) Apple is gearing up to release a CDMA iPhone

Well, there's a lot of secondary evidence to support this. Apple is reportedly going to use Qualcomm chips in the next iPhone. There was that whole Qualcomm job listing for an iPhone developer that was quickly pulled. Qualcomm designs CDMA chips. There are also reports Qualcomm is working on a chipset capable of CDMA and GSM. I personally think a CDMA capable iPhone is coming but it's likely to support both CDMA and GSM in one body.

2.) Verizon turned down the iPhone once already
And I'll tell you that considering the Apple iPhone retention rate at AT&T, Verizon wishes they had caved in to Apple's demands. While Verizon will likely still balk at any onerous terms, Apple is likely to demand less. That's because Apple has outgrown AT&T. The deal made sense four or five years ago considering Apple's brand image and the need to start out fresh in a completely new market.

In today's market, Apple is an influential player even if they're not the largest player. For continued growth of the iPhone I don't think it is critical that Apple moves to Verizon. However, Verizon is the ideal partner. It has the largest network in the USA and the capacity needed to support higher data use that Sprint does not. Sprint also uses WIMAX and not LTE which is what both AT&T and Verizon will be using for their 4G networks.

3.) Jobs if nothing else has a pretty massive ego (I'm not saying he shouldn't have one, but he does, He likely holds a grudge against Verizon)
I think holding a grudge is overplayed. He likely hates Bill Gates and Steve "Developer" Ballmer for certain stuff that Microsoft has done to Apple but that doesn't mean he won't work with them if it benefits Apple. Heck, he likely hates Eric Schmidt (Google CEO) for releasing Android and competing with Apple while Schmidt was on Apple's board. That doesn't mean he won't work with Schmidt and Google either.

4.) Apple loves to leverage carriers that will negotiate with them, They could get a better deal from Sprint.
Agreed. They could get a better deal from Sprint but I think Verizon provides the better use network as well as use of resources. See comments above.

5.) Verizon hates to leave phones alone, likely they're demanding their own app store from Apple or a cut of the app sales from any iPhone on Verizon's network.

I dunno, I like to think out loud sometimes...
Verizon does love to dictate stuff but in this case, I think they'll make an exception. I think this factor, more than any other, will determine if Verizon and Apple works together. Verizon, and other carriers, are so used to milking the customers with custom ring tones and game downloads. Apple's iTunes, and to a lesser degree Androids app store, threatens a hugely profitable revenue stream. The cat is already out of the bag though and I think they are willing to compromise.

Ah man! I am on Sprint! If the iPhone came to Sprint, I'd stick with my Evo. ;)

No, you wouldn't need any hardware changes. RIM produces one model of the BlackBerry 9700 and just flashes it differently for either 850/1900 or 1700mhz support, depending on carrier. Apple could also follow such a process.

I'm on Sprint and am kind of torn on whether I would prefer the iPhone to be offered on Sprint or not. On the one hand... sweet, the iPhone is here! On the other hand... damn my network has slowed to a crawl. WTF happened???

Palm doesn't carry the "clout" (read: hoards of people who buy, and overpay, for anything and everything they make) of Apple. That said, the Pre was a nice device when it came out. I'm fairly happy with mine. Palm just didn't have the resources back then to launch a full assault on Apple.

With HP backing, I have a hunch the next Palm phone will be quite good. WebOS is definitely a viable and competitive OS.

as an apple stockholder im mad that apple isnt doing more to get iphone and ipad on other carriers after all this time. iphones days as the best smartphone are numbered, as android is progressing too quickly, and theyre missing a huge opportunity to lock in verizon customers. at this point though, by releasing on verizon they could get an instant doubling or tripling of their users. i dont think it will happen though, verizon isnt going to give jobs the deal he wants because they dont have to.

Android being on all carriers, its only a matter of time until Android devices outpace the iPhone.

Apple's contract is up in 2012, if its not 2011 that the iPhone goes CDMA, its going to definitely happen in 2012.

I think Verizon is back to their old ways and is probably sticking it to Apple once again since Verizon now has Android in control. I don't think Verizon is going to give Apple the amount of power that ATT did.

I would rather have the iPhone go to Tmobile or Sprint, Verizon has too much power as a carrier.

According to a survey, around 8 million Verizon customers want an iPhone. Since a survey doesn't mean much, I'll cut that in half and say that Apple would probably get 4million users instantly if they went with Verizon.

I would go on a limb and say that the iPhone would sell more in its first few months on VZW than its first few months with AT&T.

These threads always keep coming up. Every year before an iPhone is released there is news that the iPhone is coming to Verizon and every year it doesn't happen. Sure this could be the year, but it would make more sense for the iPhone to come to T-Mobile.

When you look at the number of CDMA users in the world, it is maybe 100-200 million tops. Why would Apple make another device to reach 100-200 million when they could just put more money into manufacturing more GSM iPhones which means it can reach even more? It's not just about the US. It's about global market also.

The iPhone does support T-Mobile's 3G network with the 2100MHz band that they just put into the iPhone 4.

Even more interesting was the news that WM7 is going to be AT&T exclusive.
