What if I just use (2) nics and a crossover patch cable between 2 computers....?

What kind of performance would one get?

Would I be able to have both computers share the internet (dial up)?
Would performance be horrible?

One would act as the 'gateway' and have the dialup modem in it, the other would use IP or NETbeui (however it's spelled) or IPX to send and receive data from the gateway computer.

Performance would suck ass, since you're on a dialup, but transfers just between the computers wouldn't be too bad, about what you'd get with a regular network setup.

I believe that you will also need to set up internet sharing software on the computer with the modem such as Windows ICS, Wingate, etc.

I assumed that would be understood, that you couldn't just plug and play. :)

Normally I'd say don't even consider ICS in Win98SE, but...it's only dialup...

Yep.. I was thinking about using SYGATE.com for the software.

But would the internet speed diminish on either computer? Could both computers share the bandwidth.... would the performance using the internet be the same with this setup... as with using a hub (regarding the internet)?

Any software needed if I am just sharing data between the 2 computers? Both using win98.

Thanks for the repsonses.

Well you can only download so fast using a dialup modem. So if both computers where accessing the internet at the same time it would be horribly slow. But if only one computer is used at a time it should be about as fast as if either computer was on dialup.

Saying what Lord Evermore already said, Using Win98 I would just use TCP/IP or Netbeui (IPX/SPX if you where playing certin games) if you where going to just share files or use a printer. But if you where going to share internet access you would have to use something like Wingate or something of that nature.

Unless you're not downloading, you'll see very little slow down in speed when surfing the web. I had this setup in my house with my dad. It worked great. Win2K ICS is also much better. Win98se ICS (on the server) works, but you could run into problems if you had installed and uninstalled NICs and Modems (even the same modem/NIC). The registry on Win98se screws up the ICS because of multiple entries. Hwever, there are sites that tell you how to delete those extra entries in the bios.

Where do I locate ICS ... is it included on the WIn98 disk... or shareware...? Would the SYGATE.com software be as good?

Thanks.
