What if I do shut down during Updates??

The other day we had a power outage here, and so I went to shut down my Windows 7 box, which was still running on the UPS. When I did, it started into a Windows Update with the warning to not stop or unplug it. It took a LONG time and I began to worry about the UPS running out of juice and dying in the middle of it.
What DOES happen if you stop it or it dies in the middle of an Update?

Sometimes nothing, it will just fail that update and the rest

Sometimes it could corrupt something can cause windows to be in a non bootable situation which in that case, sometimes you can boot into safe more and do a system restore to before the updates

My sister (not computer savvy) turned off her old laptop with Vista during one of those warnings not to turn it off, just last month. Got stuck in a boot loop and I tried salvaging it through system restore and anything else I could find. Nothing worked. Had to reinstall Windows.

Well, yuckie. I have never done a System Restore, never had to. I hope it is not too hard to learn how to do.
Am I right it is something built in, so it doesnt require that I do something to set up a restore point?

Correct, as long as it was not disabled prior to doing the updates, when you boot into safe more you just load it up and restore to before you started doing the updates. Just go to Start -> Search fo System Restore or type rstrui.exe in the Run box

Now some people will say they have not had any luck with it and I have seen the same but usually in these sort of cases if you do a restore to the day of or the one previously (as it lists possible restore points) it usually works ok. Now if you tried to go to a restore point 2 months ago, then thats a different story, which usually does not work as well from what I have seen

Your installation cd should also allow you to access system restore providing you with additional options before you wipe it out.

Yes, I do have images - I use EaseUS, and do one about once a week, stored on an external hard drive. But I dont do it just before updates, which of course come without warning.
Thanks all, for the advices

I've found having an image of your system drive can save a lot of time in certain situations.
Excellent point. That is what I have long done - any new major upgrades or OS changes are always applied after cloning the OS drive. Only takes about 10-15 minutes, but can save hours of frustration if things don't go well.

But how do you control that? When I get Windows Updates [Windows 7] they always get started when I shut down or restart, I never know in advance that they will be there. So I never know when I would need to do a backup first.
I presume the updates are something that get downloaded automatically and saved until there is a shutdown/restart, then they get run. But I dont get any notice of their being ready to run. Is there some setting I am missing?

Since you're on Win7, you may want to select the option to download updates and notify when they are ready to be installed so you can do a backup at that time.
Another way you could do it is just set a reminder to do a backup right before Patch Tuesday (2nd tuesday of the month).

I set mine to notify me when updates are available, but not to download or install them until I say so. That way I'm never surprised when new updates are being downloaded or installed before shut down.

The last two posts say how to control. Control is via the upgrade option. Notify me and I will decide the when.

Sorry for being a dummy, but where do I go to do these things? After poking around, I think it's done at

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings

and select the option I want

Nespah?

Thanks again for the help. This has been a nagging problem for me
