We're suppose to learn from History.

I didnt like how German Chapter 1+2 played.

I dont think i want to see German Chapter III.

There's no need for nuclear weapons at all. Get rid of them all. They have no purpose in modern war.

It would be interesting to see how it would play out if Germany started developing nukes. We deny countries like Iran nukes but what about Germany? They have been pretty cool lately.

I'm not sure but I think Germany might already have nukes anyways...

Optimistic mind: agreed!

Pessimistic mind: when all "nice" countries get rid of nuclear weapons, the "evil" countries will use them to their advantage.

Responding to a nuclear threat with more nukes doesn't really accomplish anything and only punishes innocent citizens. I'm all for selective bombing of the people who actually make the bad decisions for evil countries.

Germany can already build nukes if it chose too, it choses not too. Most of the world including the US and Russians are trying to get rid of nukes.

Germany could easily build nuclear weapons but they signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, so why worry? They Germans are not "the bad guys" anymore, we don't need to be watching their every move. If my (British) government and the American government has made anything clear it's that we don't like the middle-east.

As joshsquall said, we should be working on getting rid of nukes entirely. Which reminds me, when is the US going to decomission their ten thousand warheads, when is my country going to decomission our 200 warheads, when is Russia going to decomission their 16,000 warheads? Didn't we all sign this treaty?

I'm not sure how you took what I said, but I'm not saying we hate the middle-east, just that our governments seem to. :p

It's pretty counterfactual, considering Germany wants nothing to do with nuclear weapons and, during the Cold War, basically led the charge to have them dismantled. That being said, I think they would be discouraged from obtaining them. It's really idiotic though. NPT worked because there was the promise that Russia and the US (along with the other nuclear powers) would disarm. When it became obvious they had no plans to dismantle their own weapons, NPT began to break down and it will only get worse. After all, who are we (the nuclear powers) to tell everyone else "we can have them, but not you."

Their "WIR MUSSEN DIE JUDEN AUSROTTEN" stance during chapter II hasent impressed me one bit :frown:

But since everyone has nukes these days, what they gonna do? They launch at us, we launch at them, we both lose. Since theyre not daft i dont think theyre gonna go crazy and start ww III anytime soon.

I don't have an answer to your question, but you might be interested in reading a great book about Germany's place in nuclear research before and during WWII. The book 109 East Palace captures the tensions of the time quite well. Great read.

Germany and Japan (I might as well add them) are both already nuclear powers. While they both only use it for energy -- and Germany is actually getting rid of its nuclear plants -- it's not that difficult to go from their current abilities to weapons. Afterall, they're two highly advanced countries with all of the means to do so.

The US and Russia have made pretty good progress over the last decade plus. The last of our Peacekeepers (MX) missiles have been decomissioned and our remaining Minuteman IIIs have been de-MIRVed. Thousands of surplus warheads have already been dismantled. The Russians have done likewise.

Some amount of nuclear weapons will always be kept as a hedge since it is simply impossible to un-develop them and nobody knows what the future might bring.

Your (England) Vanguard class SSBNs have another 20-30 years of service life left so I doubt they will be retired anytime soon.

Dude, where have you been? It is because of their past that Germans are the extreme pacifists that they are. I mean, they are pro-Israel to the max but even disagree with their invasion of Lebanon. They were of course against the Iraq war, etc. And if they are pacifists first, then they are environmentalists second. They hate all things nuclear.

Ironically they gave (and I do mean as a literal gift) Israel several submarines that are able to fire nuclear armed cruise missiles.

I'd have no problem with it at all just like I have no problem with Iran seeking nuclear power while under the watchful eye of the IAEA (which they are now).

I personally see a difference between being a nuclear-armed power yourself and supplying the people you committed genocide against 60 years ago with the means to defend themselves...all the while providing jobs for your citizens.

With India and Pakistan as new nuclear powers, stagnation in the nuclear arsenal of the five NPT nuclear powers and moves of the GWB I administration to encourage mini nuke research, the success of nuclear non proliferation in the last ten years was ambivalent.

However there's no reason to believe that Germany wants to become a nuclear power. The people don't really like anything nuclear and thanks to its NATO membership, Germany is already defended by nukes.

pointless when we can't even get north korea/iran to stop. unless theres a super army built up to threaten total destruction of all who don't turn in everything its not gonna happen. if we can't get the psycho nations to stop, theres no starting point

even Belgium has nuclear weapons, it's not a big secret that nuclear bombs are stored on the NATO base Kleine Brogel near Brussels. One of the possible NATO tasks of Belgian F-16 was to respond with nuclear weapons in case of an attack by the former USSR.

The weapons are still stored at Kleine Brogel

I'm pretty sure that Germany has nuclear weapons on its territory

Yes, US stuff ;) But not sure...maybe everything was retracted already...
And no, we won't strive for nuclear warheads anytime soon :p
But we would be damn fools to get rid of our nuclear power plants without an alternative, just because 7 years of government participation by the green party :(
