If bonds didn't win the MVP this year?

What he's done so far this year.

barry has to his credit, 169 walks (one off the ml record set by babe ruth at 170)
barry has an obp of .508 the highest since foul balls were called strikes.
barry has an slugging percentage of .845 the 3rd highest, babe ruth currently holds the record at .847.
barry has hit 69 hr.

If that happens then whoever else wins it will probably give it to Bonds anyway as a symbolic gesture.

The MVP isn't about any one specific individual achievement. It's about helping your team as a whole. I haven't been paying attention to what's been happening in baseball lately, but don't assume Bonds will win MVP just because he's hit a lot of home runs.

you obviously haven't been following baseball recently.

hr has almost nothing to do w/ it.

he is putting together one of the top three offensive seasons of ALL Time and his team is in the hunt for the playoffs.

If he doesn't win it, it would be the biggest joke of all time. Bonds has turned in one of the greatest seasons at the plate in the history of baseball. His season is head and shoulders above the 98 year of McGwire and better than any year of Sosa. He has won a lot of games this year with that bat. But if his team doesn't make the post season, it certainly won't be because of him. No one is baseball has done more to help their team win this year than Bonds. Period. He may be a jerk, but there is no denying he is without question in my mind the MVP this year.

I'm not a huge fan of Bonds by any means, but if he does not win the MVP this year, then the award will become meaningless in my eyes. Only one person has ever put up power numbers like Bonds has this year, and that's Babe Ruth.

But if they don't make the playoffs then he shouldn't win it. If they don't beat out Arizona then someone from one of the four playoff teams should get it.
edit: (i.e. Luis Gonzales who only has a measly 56 home runs)

I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve it, but I'd rather see a "nice guy" win. I've never liked Bonds, and won't start liking him just because he hits lots of homers.

You are correct, I haven't been paying attention very much.
Those stats though are amazing and he better get it. I wonder why more people in the news haven't been talking about him and his accomplishments this year? 98 was a huge year for baseball and everyone was talking about what was happening back then. Not many people are talking about Bonds now.

Huo

liking him has nothing to do with it. OMG. i hate hearing that.

you don't have to "like" a player to acknowledge Excellence. Did any of us like Carl Lewis? i didn't. do i acknowledge that he was an incredible Track and field athlete? how could anyone not?

PG

it's cause people like Huo think whethor or not we "Like" an athlete has anything to do w/ whether or not we recognize his excellence.

Barry bonds said in one of his interviews, that 20 years from now, our greatest regret was that we weren't able to appreciate his play when he was actually playing.

he is definitely a first time HOFer. our kids will look in the record books and talk of bonds the way we talked about ruth, or ted williams or joe dimaggio and they'll ask us, did we see bonds to such and such and we will say, "nah, i didn't "like" him".

how pathetic. if you apreciate sports, appreciate its excellence, personalities are meaningless, man i was personally nauseated at sammy sosa's running around w/ the flag thing. talk about taking advantage of a situation to further his own image. none of us knows what these guys are like personally, just look at what they do on the field. everything else is just BS.

I think it's for a couple of reasons. When McGwire broke the record, it had been almost forty years since the last record and it was a big deal. With it happening so quickly again it's not as big a deal. I remember when McGwire was going for it and they cut into every sports event I was watching and would show his at bats. Now, I've seen Giants games get cut into by football games and other events. Also, the attacks on the U.S. have also somewhat overshadowed the homerun chase a bit. There's probably other reasons as well but I think these are just a couple of valid ones.

I'm not going to knock Bonds and his achievements this year. And I'm not going to cry if he gets the MVP. I do think other players should be considered. For example, Pujols of St Louis- More hits, More Doubles,Higher Avg, Close to the Same RBI (Pujols 128, Bonds 132), able to play multiple positions (All Outfield, 1st & 3rd), a .966 fielding percentageon 584 chances (Bonds is at .976 , but with 250 chances). And His team WILL be in the playoffs

At the very least , he should be considered. At least I feel he's got the Rookie of the year locked up for the NL

True, if the Giants get in then Bonds deserves a fair part of the credit
