NetBEUI is very simple; Applications do not use it, nor is it Routable. The simpler the less chance to be Trashed.
TCP/IP is affect by the LAN, by the Internet, and by variety of applications.
All of this is done via many Registry Entries that involved with the TCP/IP parameters. In time, conflicts might arise or some necessary hooks are trashed.
NetBEUI is perfectly OK for small Networks, however if you would like to revive TCP/IP for Sharing purposes.
Uninstall any Network components that are in the Network Properties, switch Off the computer and take out the Network Card (NIC), or and disable Mobo NIC. Boot the computer and use a good Registry cleaner to take out Network Entries that go nowhere.
Switch the computer Off Re-install the NIC and start again, Windows XP would re-install the core Network. At this point do not use the Network Wizards, install what ever needs to be installed manually.
The following scenario was written for debug but it can be used as a pointer for manual installation since in the process you get to the Network entries that need to be configured.
In General, you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.
Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation.

Step Two Verify Basic network setting in the OS:

If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.
Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack.
