what I learned in the hospital

shortly after posting this, I got taken to the hospital. and I've been there ever since.

just got home earlier this evening.

here's what I learned during my first hospital stay:

-old people never tie back their robe.

-even when they're diaper is filled with feces and falling off.

-by and large, old folks like to complain. the guy I shared my room with was 87. if he didn't have his breakfast in front of him by 8:01, he'd scream at the top of his lungs about how the hospital wanted him to starve. if he hit the nurse call button and a nurse didn't show up within 30 seconds, he'd scream about how the hospital wanted him to die. but when the nurses offered to move him to a room that was right next to the nurses station as opposed to the far end of the hall, he yelled at them.

-there's one thing worse than having to listen to an old man crap his pants... listening to him scream when he gets back from his circumsicsion and the anethesia starts to wear off.

-having an IV tube in your right hand totally sucks.

-so does getting woken up every time they replace it, even though you left your arm laid out and exposed so that they could easily do it while you slept.

-not that any sleeping gets done, because hospitals are seemingly loud 24/7. worse than the dorms; at least there I could hear good music.

-adjustable beds? awsome.

-having to get a doctor's note to take a shower? stupid.

I was getting hooked up for iv antibiotics 6 times a day for an hour each time. so if I knew it was coming up but was dead tired, I'd go to sleep but leave my arm dangling over the edge of the rail with my hand palm-down hoping they'd replace the IV without bothering to wake me up.

they weren't replacing the needle-thing going into my hand, though. that was there for the second I got into the ER.

not in his case ;) I guess his foreskin had hardened or something so urine wasn't flowing out fully. this cause a huge infection to develop between his foreskin and head.

it was all very gross.

sharing rooms sucks. I hated having to sit there listening to his doctors telling him his problems (he also had an enlarged prostate and kidney issues caused by all the urine blockage).
