JEDI

I'm planning to buy the k7s5a pro/xp2400+ combo from Fry's for $89. but it doesnt come with a heatsink/fan.

what do u recommend? (just want a cheap hsf that does the job.)

THX

Thermalright AX-7 @SVC is the bestbet for under $20 but I even have an SVC GC21 that cost $2 for the Fan and HS running 1.

$2 for a hsf? where you get it? link?

Thermalright SLK-800 will make for some really nice cooling that can be quiet too (if you toss on a Panaflo). Around $30.

If you'd like to save some $, the AX-7 by Thermalright is less money and almost as good as the SLK-800.

If you're really cheaping out, the SVC's (svcompucycle) GC68 (or whatever it was called) is good at about $6, but I wouldn't use it on a high-clocked system. It's a few degrees warmer than the AX-7.

JEDI, you really should specify how you plan to operate the CPU and what your case cooling situation is. Those factors are crucial in determining how you should cool your CPU.

i have an SK7 which is pretty cheap for something all copper. Fits a little better than the AX7 on my board (that and the AX7 was out of stock at the time.

The GC21 says it's for up to XP1800+ (1.53ghz), and the 2400+ is 2.0ghz (about 30% more clock).

They have the GC69 at $5.50, but its predecessor (GC68) was only rated for up to XP1800+. I'm guessing that you'd be safer getting the Thermalright AX-7 heatsink at slightly under $20. If you don't like noise, (who does?) the AX-7 is a good solution too because once you toss on a $3 Panaflo fan, it's really quite quiet.

Basically, it may not be a good idea getting a HSF rated for XP1800+ for your 2400+.

5.50 + 4.35 shipping = 9.85.

maybe just pick up a hsf at Fry's?

How much does the sk-7 cost?

something with an "s" and a "k" in the name and made by thermalright. SK-6 to SLK-900; SK7 or SLK-700 probably most suitable, chuck on a fan with the rpm that suits you, low rpm for no or lowish-overclock, medium to high if you want to see how far you can push it 🙂. Actually can probably get fine cooling even with a low rpm pabst/panaflo with any of those heatsinks.
