This cpu will NOT BE OVERCLOCKED. I have an old hsf that came in the retail package with my 1.2ghz athlon. Will this hsf be enough for a stock 1700+ tbred. I would rather not have to go buy a new one. If i do need to get a new one, then where can i get a fairly silent one for cheap cheap?

I think this might be right up your alley for a Non-Over-Clocked CPU. The SVC GC68 costs $5 + Shipping from SVC.

But an L1A or 80 mm Zalman fan will cost an additional $5, if you think the stock fan is too loud.

The GC68 is meant for Palomino Athlon XP up to 1800+ PR. The Tbreds have a smaller die, and being made from entirely Aluminum, the GC68 may not be that suitable even though a Tbred 1700+ produces a lot less heat than a Palomino 1800+ in absolute terms.

Well, does a 1700+ run cooler then a 1.2ghz athlon? If so then the retail 1.2ghz athlon hsf should work fine on my 1700+.

Its not just a matter of which one running cooler. The 1700+ T-bred has a smaller die size, and because of that, a smaller surface area to dissipate heat. All Thunderbird HSFs, including your 1.2GHz model, are all Aluminum designs, and Al isn't as good a conductor of heat as copper, which is why AMD prescribes that all Athlon XP(T-bred) processor HSFs have at least a copper embedded base.
