What household things could I use for filtering intake air?

Cheesecloth is probably too dense, no? I want something that can filter dust but has good airflow (duh).

Automotive air-cleaner material! :) Or as PCHPlayer once suggested, 12" x 4" AirKontrol HVAC filters.

go to home depot. foam a/c filters cost 99cents for a few square feet. i use 1" washable furnace filter because it catches more but is still rather loosely knit. you can't put too dense a filter in front of pc fans, they don't fight back pressure well. else a hepa filter would be wonderful, but you'd have to use blowers or complicated ducted large fans in series to force air through.

my ghetto filter setup, efficiency/ease of servicing over asthetics ;), the sheets are taped so it bends away from fan s a bit to boost surface area

sans filters

you have to make sure more air is drawn through the filtered intakes then is sucked out by exhaust fans, else you'll suck dust through cracks and vents wasting your efforts. gotta also compensate for the loss of airflow from the filters.

"used dryer sheets" would be better than new. do not use fiberglass filters. any form of open cell foam filter... basically, if you cant see through it, dont use it. and just cuz you can see through it doesnt mean you should use it.

really? i have a few heavy duty ones right here and they seem too dense to pass much air, then again maybe mine are differnet.

Must be - I got these at Costco, for scrubbing dishes. I took a stong vacuum and put a pad against it, but so much air passes through that it does not stick at all.

I made my own with pantyhose and some wire window screen mesh (to keep it stretched to the size of fan)
They work great, but now i just keep positive airflow in my case and no longer have dust problems.

but you see, the problem is a strong vacumns use blowers, normal radial fans really really suck at fighting back pressure. very low static pressure.

Welp, I gave it a try, covering my intake Thermalfake FartSman II with it. Temp remained the same, fan rpm went from 3308-3341 to 3341-3375. I can feel the rush of air through the pad, as well.

I have a specific thread on how to filter the siode holes in an Antec Sonata case, but I was wondering if any of you folks might know if using electrostatic filters could be harmful?

I picked up a vent filter from Home Depot, but it is "self-charging electrostatic". Is it smart to put this next to my components?

Thanks for any help. If it is, I'm just gonna go w/ used dryer sheets or pantyhose, I guess.
