Just found out that at my new business location, there is no DSL and no Cable internet available.

I was wondering as to what other options are there ? I am surprised that the complex is not wired for any of these as there are few banks, starbucks and other big national brands in the complex....

FIOS not available in CA yet.

What buisness if I may ask?

What about the local Wisp? Or, if push comes to shove, satelite.

It is a Retail business. For Satelite, I might need a "permit" from the city first and that might take a long time (even the landlord might not allow it). Will look into it.

Where are you located?

Get a mobile broadband card?

Thats what I am also thinking....seems to be the best economical option so far....I am wondering as to what speeds we get ? Cingular 3g network should give ~600-700kbps down but what about upload ?

Thanks for quick replies...I need to get this done before this weekend as I am taking over the business middle of next week.

Get SewerLine1000 Gigabit service.

As we all know (ty<3 Mr. Stevens) the internet is a series of tubes. The biggest tubes that run by are houses are the sewer lines. Shortly after this discovery, ISPs developed a method for running the internets through the sewer lines. In fact, anyone connected to the sewer system already has the proper hardware to connect. Since our minds are already in the gutters with 80% of all internet traffic being used for porn, ISPs only have to make a few small changes to the wireless link to allow the other 20% of e-garbage to pass through.

It's pure genius.

T1 starting @ $500+/mo is too expensive for the business type... I want to keep it at under $75/mo.

Will look at Satellite and ISDN also but so far, it seems like Wireless Card will be the best option.

Ok...after doing some research..it seems like I have the following options:

Sprint or Verizon EVDO @ ~60/month
Cingular HSPDA @ ~60/month
Satellite @ ~60/month

What do you guys recommend ?

I woudl go with Sprint and get an EVDO Rev.A card. It's much faster than Cingular's HSDPA right now and you get more coverage with EVDO.

Thanks...researching between Sprint EVDO Rev. A and Cingular HSPDA. From whatever I have gathered so far, it seems like HSPDA is better ?

I need connectivity on a desktop, so I think that I will also need a PCMCIA -> PCI adapter, right ?

Sprint: $59.99/mo

Cingular HSPDA: $79.99/mo standalone OR $59.99/mo if added to my Cingular family talk plan

So both will probably end up costing me the same but leaning towards Sprint..

btw, do you guys recommend a USB modem or PCMCIA card (and then use a PCMCIA -> pci adapter) ??

you can plug the card into one of these wireless router boxes so that your desktop(s) can share the connection

Yeah stay the heck away from Verizon, I've heard they'll cancel your account without warning if you exceed 5GB of bandwidth use a month.

I'm using Alltel EVDO rev. 0 and have been pretty pleased with it. We actually pay $25/month for unlimited use. I don't use a broadband card, but rather plug my phone into the computer whenever I want to get on the internet and dialup that way. If this sounds like a good option for you might want to check if Sprint will let you do this. You can still receive calls while online, but you'll have to disconnect to take the call. Or you could just not answer and it will forward to your voicemail.

Download is typically 600kbps (although I've seen 1Mbps+ with download accelerators). Upload is typically 100kbps or so. The major downside is the latency, which is typically about 400ms to US servers. Makes the connection useless for most low latency applications, such as VoIP, gaming, etc. Also I've noticed that sometimes when I attempt to make a lot of connections (such as BitTorrent and other P2P, or using a download accelerator) it'll disconnect me. I think this is something that Alltel does. It has to do with how EVDO works, I guess it's half duplex or something, and they don't like it when you make a whole bunch of connections. I won't try to explain it because I can't, search Google and you should find some helpful info. That being said, I've been downloading probably 20-30GB/month and Alltel doesn't seem to care.

Cingular 3G HDSPA/UTMS are only in major metro areas... thus I asked for your location

With mobile broadband you're better off going with a Laptop

Cingular 3g HSPDA is available in the SF Bay Area (Vallejo, CA and Alameda, CA are my two locations). Right now, I am looking at Sprint....doing some more research to see if Sprint will allow me to tether with my phone.

Satilight? Or FIOS?

FiOS! 15-30 MB/s Fiber Optic! Or Rapid Systems type cell tower networking. Or you can keep waiting for WiMAX to arrive.

I know several electric companies are offering broadband via their high voltage powerlines. It's been a few years since I checked on it but the last time I did, it seemed to be a popular option for those markets. But I cannot remember the name of the service or the markets they operated in.

Just get a wifi card with exernal antenna connection then connect it to the mother of all out door antennas then highjack some unsuspecting unsecured connection.. FREE ACCESS!

I use clearwire for my home and sprint for my lappy.

Clearwire is actually faster than my old cable modem was in Alaska.
