What heatsink will give me a few more degrees of cooling ?

Mixman

Senior member
Right now I have a Zalman 7000B AlCu on my X2 3800. I have gotten to 2650 so far but I feel I can get a little more out of the cpu. My temps are were 40deg with the stock cooler at idle and now 38 deg at idle. Not a big change.

The heatsinks I am looking at are : XP120,Si120, XP90 and the Typhoon. I am mounting this to a DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra D board. Any other sinks I should consider ? I would like to get another 5 or 6 degrees more.

Thanks that thread was a great help. I think I am more inclined to go for the XP120 as oppossed to a XP90.

The only one not mentioned is the Big Typhoon. Where does that place ? I know I can return my Zalman to ZipZoomFly and maybe not loose the 15% if at the same time I get the Typhoon. The Typhoon would also be a little cheaper than the XP120 with a fan....$49.95 opposed to $56.00.

Well, not only does it have a larger fan (more air with less noise), but you'd also be changing from AlCu from pure copper. I think it will get your temps lower by a few degrees, but not more than 5 °C.

It's nice because it's HUGE. It should easily cool the CPU, MOSFETs, and RAM too. But the fan doesn't move very much air unless it's on high. 🙂

Personally, I would go with a Thermalright XP-90 or a Scythe Ninja, depending on your budget.

The Tt Typhoon aparently is the best cooling heatsink without going to water. Not alot of people use them because Tt has a bad name but from everything I have read from people that have either the xp90+a typhoon or a 120 and a typhoon, the typhoon outcools it with less noise.

That statement is debatable at best....

Right now the Scythe Ninja ia in my opinion the heatsink to beat.

But with that said I have seen reviews where the XP120 as well as the xp90 all copper were all almost exactly the same temperature......
Then you have the Zalman 9500 which as of now on my system....see my specs...
at Idle is 27c.......off the top of my head I can`t remember what the load temp was....

I told JBDan what the load temp was....but I`m going to do a 12 hrs burn tonight...

Anyways have fun!! 🙂

Go read reviews. It outperforms all of the current heavy hitters with the stock fan

dependds on the reviews you have read.
As well as the quality of the reviewing site.
I have read reviews....I stand by what i said!!🙂

Hey JEDI, I tried to PM you but I couldn't.
Anyway, I have a 7000b-cu LED and it is very quiet. I've been wanting to get a better cooler. Right now I'm looking at the Big typhoon, XP-120, or the new 9500LED.
You have tried 2 out of the 3. which 1 would you recommend?

TIA!

Sonic tower is a good cooler as well, just entirely to big.

Buy what you think will be easiest and the cheapest to install. But the Typhoon beats the ninja and outperforms the thermalrights with the same speed fan.

Prove me wrong.

I don`t think anybody will try to prove you wrong.
The point is you cannot say that the Big Typhoon is the absolute best CPU cooler on the market.
All those threads you posted do not back up your position.
In fact they actually prove that "Yes" the big Typhoon is a good CPU cooler.
Thats all they prove.

You stated it was the best!
You did not prove your point with those threads.
The reason why is the Big Typhoon never went toe to toe with all the best.
We already knew about the Zalman 9500--sorry JEDI I had to bring it up.

The 27c at Idle that JEDI is getting is pretty impressive for aircooling.

In hindsight I would also say all those links but one are from iffy websites when it applies to testing anything.

I will continue to use my AMD approved factory heatsink.

I never said it was, I stated "The Tt Typhoon apparently is the best cooling heatsink without going to water." As far as I can tell its the best air cooler on the market that I could find without going to water/phase change/peltier. a1 and xbit are very well respected, the xp-120 is out performed by the big typhoon there. The xp-120 and the xp-90c are the current heavy hitters as far as heatsinks go. I haven't seen any reviews for the 9500 although with an asking price of 76$ I probably wouldn't consider buying one anyway and most likely, assuming the fan is proprietary, it could be outperformed by a delta on another heatsink.. There was nothing wrong with what I said to start with, everyone has an opinion. Mixman asked for them I gave him all the information I had to go on, thats all.

In the end, the xp-90c, si-120, ninja, or the typhoon are all good coolers. Since you're getting a DFI board I wouldn't go near the typhoon unless you're comfortable installing parts. Aparently Tt doesn't include a backplate that fits the DFI w/o having to buy new longer screws.

well apparently its not the best cooling heatsink without going to water...
Is it in the top 5 of course is it the best without going to water...UUmmmm no!

You see what you are over looking is that reviews are just that reviews.
They are an aid in helping people make up there mind which heatsink to purchase.

Yet as i stated most of those sites you listed as your PROOF were in fact sites that truly are not recognized for there accurate reviews.

When dealing with heatsinks there are agin---sorry JEDI-- too many variables for anybody to make such a brash statement as the best.

What works for you might not bear out the same reading on somebody elses computer.......

🙂

So reviews really don't offer us anything? Hmm.. I tell you what then, I'll sell you a Ford Pinto, no use reading into it, Ford says it is a great car; they built it so they know what they're talking about.

As far as currently offered CPU coolers are concerned, the Tt typhoon is one of the best performing currently available. That is fact. Not opinion. As far as it being the next best thing to water cooling that is opinion. See the difference here? You cannot say that it isn't in the top five, you can't say it?s not the best, again as you have stated there are to many variables to conclude one way or another. You are offering opinion, not fact. I can say I believe it to be the best cooler available if I so chose, that is my perogative, you can say a spark7 is the best cooler ever made, that?s your right. I managed to offer PROOF as far as PROOF goes. If you want to get technical, testing a chipset cooler in a clean room environment severely limits how well the cooler will cool because there is little to no air flow in the room. The sites I have offered show benchmarks and chipset temperature readings as well as ambient readings, that is all a normal person could be expected to do regardless of what site it is. If reviewer A has a heatsink that is keeping their cpu temperature at 30c idle over a period of a few days and reviewer B has the same results with a similar setup in a relatively similar ambient temperature then you should expect the same results. Heatsinks are built to the same specs, its something that can be picked out to be better than others. ?Cherry picking? a heatsink doesn?t happen. If you do not get those same results then something is wrong either with your installation or the company itself. If you don't think the sites offer accuracy, point them out, we can question them. If you can't offer to show me anything on the contrary then I suggest you not respond to the post. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. All you have managed to state is that I am wrong because you say so and because the sites are wrong. It was a simple question of which heatsinks we believed would offer a performance increase. I offered my opinion, if you wish to try and chastise me for it I suggest you offer some evidence to back up your claim as opposed to turning it into a flame. The xp-90c, si-120, ninja or typhoon are all good coolers. They would all offer a performance boost. That?s the end of it, if you wish to continue arguing over it I suggest you pm me, I would be more than glad to explain to you why it is people draw conclusions over a series of reviews as opposed to two people saying the reviews aren't any good and therefore don't count. As soon as I see a Zarubable list of the most respected review sites on the internet plastered on a magazine I will defer to your judgment. Until that time saying someone is wrong out of hand isn?t a good idea.

Good day,

Lifestealer---plz get a grip and read what people are saying!
You are not reading what has been said!!
You are getting all emotional for nothing!
You state--

So reviews really don't offer us anything? Hmm..
-- Did you read anything the Zarubable said? That was not what zarubable said in her post!

I quote--You see what you are over looking is that reviews are just that reviews.
They are an aid in helping people make up there mind which heatsink to purchase.

In my opinion reviews are way over rated. But what they can and should be used for is as a guide to help you in deciding what you eventually purchase!

Some sites such as this site and the overclcoking club ad the Over Clockers Cafe and Exteme Systems and Extreme OverClocking etc...are all sites known for there accurate reviews.......as well as many other sites!!

As far as currently offered CPU coolers are concerned, the Tt typhoon is one of the best performing currently available. That is fact.
--- ok that is a fact as far as what you percieve to be accurately reported in the reviews!

I can say I believe it to be the best cooler available if I so chose, that is my perogative,
yes in your opinion!

The Tt Typhoon aparently is the best cooling heatsink without going to water. --
based on what?? Not based on those reviews....because I hardly would call them substantial reviews!

Heatsinks are built to the same specs, its something that can be picked out to be better than others. ?Cherry picking? a heatsink doesn?t happen. If you do not get those same results then something is wrong either with your installation or the company itself. If you don't think the sites offer accuracy, point them out, we can question them
Yes heatsinks are made to the same specs- but what you are missing are the hidden variables that would say make the Zalman 9500 or even the Scythe Ninja a better heatsink for my system that the Big Typhoon!

if you wish to try and chastise me for it I suggest you offer some evidence to back up your claim as opposed to turning it into a flame.
If disagreeing with you and stating an alternative opinion is considered flaming you then so be it!
What I read was you making an absolute statement that was 100% truth - with no margin for any other heatsink to be included.
You never once stated or used the words "IN MY OPINION".....

Also to accuse people of flaming you is sort of childish don`t you think?

The xp-90c, si-120, ninja or typhoon are all good coolers. They would all offer a performance boost.-- finally you statement that we all could agree on--yet you left out the Big Typhoon(??) what gives? hehehee

YES--I will have to say we all have a bad habit of grasping any reviews no matter if its a respected site or not that agrees with the product that we have fallen in love with. Accurate or not!!

Have a nice day!! 🙂

The xp-90c, si-120, ninja or typhoon are all good coolers

Its a flame because he/she offered nothing to back up their opinion and simply stated all but one of the review sites wasn't worth going over.

That link shows an xp-120 somewhat outperforming a Tt water setup (Although the setup isn't worth anything...) The Typhoon outperforms the xp-120 in the reviews I posted. So as far as Tt's watercooling is concerned the Typhoon outperforms water cooling to some extent. I don't understand why it was such a big statement to start with. I said it aparently is the best cooler... So let me break it down for you. From what I have seen after a number of comparisons the typhoon outperforms the other coolers. Thats all, I simply asked for something to show otherwise. Thats all. Its simple.

The hidden values are just that, hidden. Until you have tried all of the coolers for the same period of time using the same burn in time ect ect.. its not a value you are likely to get. The op uses a dual core system, the typhoon is a good x2 cooler. Anyways, the ninja is fugly. 🙁

I agree to disagree and leave it at that.

you never have to offer a thing if what was offered by the other party is not conclusive....

Yes--we agree to disagree!!
