What heatsink/fan/thermal paste are you using for your Q6600?

I wanted to see what most people are using here as I just got my Q6600 and in the market for a heatsink/fan/thermal paste. Would also appreciate some temps as well. Thanks!

I have a a Tuniq, Zalman 9700, Scythe Infinity, Thermaltake duo orb, zalman 7000CU, AF64, and have used AS4, AS5, Ceramique, MX1, STG1, and Shin Etsu. I am currently using MX2 and its close to what Shin estu was. On one of my quads I have a lapped zalman 9700 with a Lapped G0 quad using AS5. My other quad is not lapped yet and it uses a tuniq. I am waiting on some more parts before I lap the other quad. The current kings of quads are the Thermalright Ultra 120, and the Sunbeam Tuniq, the zerotherm hsf recently seen on AT did fairly well compared to the current crop as well.

i thought mark and i were the only ones on this forum addicted to quads :X

But yeah get a tuniq Tower or TR120Extreme. Those are the top you can get on air without moding something.

Then theres always watercooling. :T

Quads are THE way to go if you're doing real work. ;)

Wait until hyperthreading comes back. EACH quad core socket will show 8 processors in task manager. :Q

An el cheapo, $0.99 AR, unlapped Coolermaster Hyper TX2 HS /Thermalright Bolt-thru kit with AC MX-2 and an Antec 900 case. My Q6600 wiil do 3.60 Ghz Prime95 stable at 1.3575v, 58C at full load, 20C ambient temp. If you have a case with excellent air flow, low ambient temp, and a Q6600 with a low VID (mine's 1.2375V) then you don't need a 4 lb., 2' tall HS.

So those two are the best hands down?

Manimal, which one of the ones you have is the quietest and best performer? I'd like good performance, but noise is a factor for me.

Sadly quietest and best performing dont really go hand in hand. The 9700 lapped cools about as well as the Tuniq does in an unlapped state. That being said both are the loudest things in my cases on high fan speed which is very much needed at load on all my quads above stock voltage. I dont have a TRUE yet but I would gather one could get a relatively quiet setup with the right fan, A volt modded yate loon would not push enough air to to really be effective above 1.4 volts though I may try it when my TRUE gets here. The quietest setup I had was a push pull yate loon setup on the scythe which cooled my E6600 at 3.6 admirably. I have not replaced the fan on the tuniq yet but if one did I would assume that a slightly quieter fan spooled up may lose a few degrees at a load but may still cool well enough at near stock volts.

Funny thing with my quads is that once I had better cooling on the NB and SB both of them needed alot less volts to be stable at load and the whole system became very quiet.

My wife recently came into my home office and said the room looked like the crazy guys room in the movie "Pi" with hardware strewn all about and my new ducting setup for my servers. Funny thing is I had a power drill near by and I held it up to my head expecting a laugh...... she didnt find it very amusing lol

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme + Scythe Silencer E 1200rpm + Arctic Silver 5 + no lapping = GREAT combination!

Quads are the way to go Aigo! (I'll be picking up a new Q6600 G0 (to replace my B3) and also a new QX9650 next week when I sell my E6400 rig).

But I used a Thermalright Ultra120 with Dual Yate-loon DS12M's and AS5. Ok temps... able to reach 3.0GHz @ 40C idle, 65 load.

I now use water (PA 120.3 w/ ApogeeGTX) with craptastically applied IC Diamond 7 and get 34C idle, 55C load @ 3.0GHz. I think I'm going to switch to MX-2 or TX-2 and remount.

From the reviews I've been reading, it seems like TU-120 Extreme is one of the quieter heatsinks. And "best air cooler" seems to be the general consensus with it. Here's a link with some temps.

3.2Ghz Q6600 G0 revision on an Asus P5K-E using an Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro with Arctic Silver Ceramique thermal compound, all at stock voltage. Temps at load max out at 57*C on 2 of the cores, and 54*C on the other 2.

I have off top of my head....
I use the Zalman ZMSTGG 1 Thermal Grease for all my computers

Zalman 9500
Zalman 9700 - currently using
Zalman CNPS8700
I also use the Zalman VF1000 on one of my vid cards.
I use the VF 700 Cu on another card.

ThermalRight products I own
XP 90
XP 120-- currently using in another rigg
SI 128
Ultra 120 extreme
IFX 14
TR 120 extreme

Thermaltake
Big Typhoon
Blue Orb 2

Scythe
Ninja
Ninja Copper
Samurai

Tuniq Tower

This just a sample of what I have in my collection and have used......

I would agree that the Tuniq Tower is in a league of its own in many ways.
But with that said-- if you pirchase the Tower or the Ultra 120 don`t be suprised if the temps are not what you thought they would be.

Also I like to collect coolermaster heatsink - They have interesting designs
CM Sphere
GeminII
Geminii S
Mars
Eclipse
Hyper TX 2
Several of the above can hang with the big boys temperature wise.

I have used all my heatsinks for a minimum of 2-4 weeks depending in the temps at the 2 week mark.

I know quite a few of the sales reps for mthese products and have been a zalman enthusiast for a while!!

Peace......

*** the above is just a partial list of my collection.***

That is just... that's absolutely ridiculous haha. Anyway, so you're saying that you thought the Tuniq was better than the TU-120 extreme?

Isn't the XP 120 great? Still using mine and plan on migrating it to my C2D set-up when I get around to actually building one.

I realized that the TU-120 extreme isn't worth the price over the Tuniq Tower 120 and the TU-120 ultra. I'm leaning towards the Tuniq since everything you need comes with it.

Nice choice especially since the Tuniq can be had for $42 ish. Are you planning to lap it?

I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle. Some people seem to get good results from it and some people don't see much change in temps if any. I guess I'll see how the temps are first then decide if I wanna lap or not. Did you lap it? If so, how much improvement did you see in your temps?

My tuniq is unlapped at the moment but will be by the weekend. My zalman 9700 is lapped and it improved by 4-7 degrees with an unlapped chip, once the chip was lapped temps at load dropped by 11-14 degrees since that IHS was CRAZY concave. Check the chip and hsf with a razor blade or some grid paper and check the relative flatness of your stuff before you put it together. If you are super lucky you may not need to lap. Its a hit or miss proposition but personally I have noticed a ton of benefits since I started lapping.

Thanks for the feedback :D. Are you using the fan and thermal paste that came with the Tuniq or 3rd party? I think I'm just gonna get the AS 5 and S-Flex for the Tuniq.

No I am saying that when dealing with Teir1 heatsinks......even though the Tuniq and the TU 120 Extreme are real nice I still use for me the xp- 120 on my main rigg....

I do not nor will you ever hear me say one is better than the other....what I will say is most Teir 1 heatsinks will give you better twmps in extreme O/C situations compared to teir 2 heatsinks!!

Peace!!

I would. The point of diminishing returns with most 120mm heatpipe coolers is between 50 and 60 cfm so, you could always turn it down a little if it was a little on the loud side but, you can never turn up a D or an E.
