Most of the Senns are pretty safe bets especially if you get them on sale. I use shure e2cs and they are wonderful but cost a bit more. (65 on sale, 100 when now). For car travel they drown out all the noises. I havnt gotten to try them out in a plane and im not sure how the inside the ear style will work with the pressure during flight. (Up and down)

I use the Shure E2Cs for every occasion, including the plane. I travel several dozens times a year at a minimum, so they're absolutely crucial.

I think any headphones would be fine, but most won't drown out much of the noise. The Bose cancellation headphones are great, but obviously more expensive. Just don't get the low-quality earbuds as you have to turn the volume up rather loud to actually hear anything on the plane, and this is detrimental to your ears (not to mention the comfort of others as they low-quality earbuds bleed a lot of sound).

I have the etymotic reserach i6 earbuds which are very similar to the e2c's and they are great. I couldn't hear a thing. The only gripe is that you gotta constantly clean your ears before each use just to make sure you dont get any gunk on them since you really have to push them in.

Actually the Bose Quiet Comforts have gotten some awful reviews, and like all Bose products are priced far higher than what they're worth. Active noise cancellation is a technology which definitely has its place, and you don't have to pay Bose prices for it. Philips makes a pair which is highly regarded for under $40: Link (note: I just linked the first hit I got with froogle, do your own reseller research at resellerratings.com and bizrate.com if you plan on buying).

I have a pair of e2cs as well and love them, but no amount of sound blocking can block the loud noise from things like lawnmowers, etc., thus you need to turn them up to better block out background noise. This is fine for short periods of time like when I'm mowing the lawn, but if you're taking long flights or around loud noise for extended periods of time, I'd take a look at active noise cancelling phones, as having to turn them up for a good length of time can, over time, lead to hearing loss.

the one thing i don't want to do anymore is blast my music loud to over power the jet engine noises. so i definitely need to get 'active noise cancellation' headphones?

The 201s are sealed, they should be pretty good for airplane rides 🙂

I'm thinking about grabbing some for my trip to DC on the 26th, I've got some Sennheiser HD497s but they leak really bad and let in a lot of noise. They are open air so it's to be expected, but the 201s looks really nice and are CHEAP 😉

i've seen good reviews for the bose noise canceling for the use its meant for...plane travel
sealed and noise canceling is where its at. that or really good sealing canal phones. noise canceling ear buds or normal type headphones that don't quite seal are worthless.

Look at the HD280Pros. Best cans around in terms of isolation, and they're fairly cheap. Otherwise look at some IEMs, but those take a while to get used to and are quite pricey.

<---loves his E4's.

Shure e2cs. I hate traveling with big bulky items so those large bose noise cancellers or the one you listed are definitely out

you know, now that i think about it, i don't want to carry bulky headphones either, especially since i'm traveling. I did some research and apparently there are two types of noise canceling: passive and active(like RBachman said). Passive is just sealing (or an attempt to) of your ears and hopefully the majority of the noise is blocked. Active, on the other hand, takes what noise is in the environment and sends the opposite wave to your ears before it hits you, sorta canceling them out, i guess. i really want to get some active noise canceling ones now. the philips ones look alright, but i'm trying to look for some reviews. sony has theres but they are $100 🙁

looks like a winner. Sennheiser makes some great headphones. Make sure you get the noise cancelling ones though, their regular ones have such great, loud sound that everyone around you can hear a bit.

the seal is the #1 priority though, if thats inadequate the active bit is for nothin

i think i've narrowed it down to these two:
one
two

i decided to bail on the larger headphones because they are a hassle to carry when traveling. I'm going to check these out tomorrow, feel free to post other suggestions also.

Westone UM2's!!!!!

I couldn't believe i was plunking down a little over $200 for IEM's, but when i got them i could NOT believe my ears. It was such a world of difference better than the E2C's, it was astonishing. The dual drivers in each each ear really do make a difference. Probably the best $200 i've ever spent, couldn't be happier and they ROCK on flights.

BTW, besides the UM2's and the E2C's, i also had the phillips noise cancelling earbuds. Very effective to block out noise on flights, BUT, they gave me horrible headaches after about an hour of use.

i got the shure e2c's for $80 out the door, omg they are great! I'm listening to the ipod at a very low sound level but can still hear the song pretty well with my sound system blasting another song for my test. great headphones, thanks everybody!

e2cs are great for $70. though, if you like IEMs, look for the Altec Lansing iM716 for $80 on Amazon. The iM716 uses essentially modified ER6i drivers, and those have an MSRP of $180. they are excellent IEMs and I plan on getting them soon.

I second the iM716.
If you have more money to spend, the Etymotic ER-4P will be your best bet. They are the most detailed and clear earphones you'll ever hear.
I've tried several IEM's, inculding the Shure E2C, UE Super.fi 5 pro, and the UM1 and found ER-4P to be much better than the rest.
The sound isolation on the ER-4P is generally regarded as the best, except for the $1000 UE10.
