What HD to get

I am about to get a new hd. I was looking at the WD SE16 500gb. I want to get two of these, but I see everyone talking about how great the 640 are. I can get two of the 500's but only one 640. Does the 500 perform as well as the 640, or would I be better off with one 640? This is going to be an Xmas gift from my parents, and they don't want to spend the extra 20.00 for two 640's, so don't ask.

I have the 640 and its great but for a C drive, the performance is less noticeable than say a raptor. If this is for simple extra storage, I'd got with the 500.

I got the 7k1000 at 89 after rebate.. they were very fast... got 4 of them to replace my aging maxline 320gb 3 of them.

Thanks for the posts. I might just get the single 640 or a 640 black instead. I thought about putting the 500's in raid and keeping my older 160gb drive just for storage.

I purchased 2 WD 640 HD at microcenter and they were $85 each. Very nice improvement to my system.🙂

I need 1 (or 2) new HD's.. dunno if i should get 2x640GB or just 1x1TB WD black. The 1TB is a bit faster right?
