Starting to build my first HTPC - the only thing I really have left now is the HD. Is there a recommended HD? I'm looking for one that is 400+ GB.

Thanks,

I have that drive, (except that mine is IDE, retail, and it is the 7200.10) and I really like it. It is fast and quiet.

I just picked the 500 gig SATA 7200.10 Seagate drive and again it is fast and quiet.
I have a 500 gig Maxtor that is fairly noisy, so I highly recommend the Seagate for a HTPC.

Thanks for the response. How much did you pay for the 500 gig Seagate? Do you have separate drives for your OS and for movies/shows, etc?

This seems to be the best deal for the drive that you are looking at. I think that the 500 gig version was about $110 or so.

Yes, I have seperate drives for my OS and my media drive, but I'm really not sure that is needed. However, I have a slower machine for my HTPC (1.73 gHz socket A Sempron), so I make sure that it is optimized for this purpose. (7600GS AGP video card, virus scanner excludes my media folders, etc.) I figured that one drive dedicated for media would just help things.

Depends on what you want:

Speed - Maxtor MaxLine 500gb
Speed & Quiet - Seagate Barracuda 500gb
Quiet - Samsung SpinPoint 500gb

I have a MaxLine in my Shuttle right now; I really wish I had gone with a Seagate. The Maxtor is pretty noisy. The Seagate is quieter and has great performance; the Samsung SpinPoint series is the best for low noise.

The Seagate 7200.10 series is fast, quiet, and comes with a five year warranty. It's a little difficult to recommend anything else, unless noise is the only thing that matters to you (in which case the Samsung Spinpoints are what you want).
