Well, I have pretty much made my mind up with the 7770 as it suits my needs pretty much perfectly! I was looking in scan.co.uk and they have 11 cards to choose from. I am interested in the £86 - £90 and there are 4 cards to choose from, all with pretty much complete different coolers and lenghs. I will certainly try to squeeze every FPS out of the card I get and would like to have the one with pretty much the best cooler. I know every CPU/GPU/RAM module is different and a card from the same batch may or may not overclock much compared to another one. Hopefully I will get a good one when the time comes. Which one should i look into more?

Generally, when I buy cards that are not top end, I buy the cheapest one. Why? Because if I put more money towards a card that is cheap, I might as well put it towards the next better card.

If you have a number of cards that are very close to each other in price, I would pick based on cooler choice, reviews and warranty/brand. In your situation, I believe the MSI or XFX would be the best choices, just because of their custom coolers. Sapphire seems to be having a bit of a QA issue right now (the 7870 meltdowns, for one).

Yes, i would like the best cooler so i have best chances of overclocking to maybe meet the 6870 which may well be possible. Which do you say has the best cooler, i say XFX what about you?

I haven't used a card from either company in recent generations, so I can't actually say for sure. Generally I believe MSI is making better cards at the moment, but that's hearsay based on what I've heard around here.

I actually doubt that you could ever hit 6870 levels with a 7770. The difference between the two is pretty high. The point of overclocking is to get the most out of your card, but really the point of chasing a faster card by throwing money at a cheaper card is usually moot. It is usually better to buy a faster card, unless the difference in price is huge, such as going from second best to best card.

You should just look for a used 6950, you can probably talk one down to near 7770 prices and get a much better performing card.

I dont need that much performance, i like tinkering :) i always want to get my best with what i have. if i cant reach 6870 levels then i wont die over it, il just settle for sub-6870 performance. The 7770 is enough for me at stock but may aswell maybe get another 5fps or over

6950 is a true tinkerer's card, if you can find a revision that will allow you to unlock it to 6970. Of course, you probably won't get a warranty unless you find one with a double warranty.

That being said, 7770 is a decent card for the money, and there really isn't anything between that and the more expensive 7850. I believe the MSI is better built than the XFX, if you are set on those two.

I personally went with an MSI HD7770 because reviews showed it to be among the most quiet of the HD7770's and it had mostly positive feedback from owners.

Is the OC edition really £6 better than the stock, because it feels like 6 pounds worth of coolers?

If by stock you mean a reference cooler, the boxy ones with one fan, then the answer is yes. Usually it's quieter and cooler. And on higher-end cards, it sometimes means that it's a different PCB than the reference.

Now, my 670 is reference and it doesn't bother me, but that's ultimately up to you.
