What has the US or the world done about Sudan?

The worst human rights disaster in decades and a genocide by the Arab government against the people in Darfur... What has the US done? What has the world done?

This is what I don't get about US policy. Here you have a nation that is killing MILLIONS of people and has ties to terrorism, but we couldn't take that nation out?

The military of Sudan is probably far less advanced or capable than even Iraq.

What can be done or has been done by Sudan?

Thanks.

Are there any natural resources ( like oil/gas/minerals ) that the US needs in Sudan?

Are there any powerful Sudanese businessmen in the US?

Do any US businesses have a stake in what happens to them?

Even if there was a US military takeover of the country, then what?

Basically, theres not anything there anyone in the outside world wants and nobody from there has the power to do anything about it.

What will be done? Probably nothing - in 10 years we can study it like Rwanda and watch it happen somewhere else.

We have to give them 12+ years of UN ineptitude first before doing anything. Then once we do go in people will claim we didn't give it a chance and try every single diplomatic solution first. If only we'd have given it a few more months....

A major issue is the capabilities and mindset of the people in the region in which troops are to be sent. Will they, like the Marshal Plan recipients of WWII, be able to make use of the ensuing peace and financial aid to move the country toward prosperity (and the ensuring peace that comes with it)? Will they shrink from the challenge and fall back on corruption and endless squabbling? Unless the U.S. or the world is ready to play an interventionist role about one hundred times greater than that currently underway in Iraq, better to keep out.

As bad as it must sound, I agree for the moment. It would be a disaster. Ther is no infrastructure to speak of, and it would all have to be put into place before anything good could hope to happen.

I don't think we should do anything at all. For one reason, whatever involvement the US might do in that area, regardless of how helpful or successful, will be reviled and condemned by the rest of the world. For another, I'm an military isolationist. I think the US should just bring all its troops home to defend our own borders and let the rest of the world go fsck itself.

The AU wants to handle it. The African Union went from a bunch of unarmed guests to a lightly armed military unit this past year. Something is being done from within Africa that has a good chance of actually solving the problem. Let it runs its course.

The US has done more for Sudan than most other modern countries. They were involved in a deal to end one of the conflicts in the country. The US has tried to go through the UN, but it hasn't worked. Many other countries (and I believe the UN?) do not consider Sudan a genocide. In addition, some countries did not want to sanction gun sales or anything else since they were already receiving oil from Sudan.

Even if the US does nothing, it will still be 'reviled and condemned' simply because most other countries prefer to do nothing and would like to use a scapegoat.

Took the words right out of my fingertips...

I think the world would be a lot better of without the U.S enforcing their "morality" amoung nations.

While we're at it, let's bring all our jobs back home also. China would be a good place to start.

Sudan:

1. Former British Colony in Africa?

Check

2. Ethnic divisions enhanced by British theory of divide and conquer?

Check

3. US expected to fix former British colony with millitary force?

Check

Not sure what you mean. Are you purposefully describing Iraq, and a great deal of the world, and why?

here's a link to UN activities in Sudan

There's a lot of info at that website and it deals solely with Sudan. From what I've seen in the News, the Peace Keepers employed there are made up from African Nations, but other Nations such as Canada have provided Equipment and Training for those troops.

The US has tried many times to solve this situation. However, many European countries have opposed action in Sudan. I wonder why... Maybe it's because they're organizing the genocide just like in Rwanda. That's why you're seeing little response. Most genocides, starvations, etc. in Africa are usually due to European policies. This is a fact, only an extremely naive person would think otherwise.

Powell has been all through this with the UN, but he could not get the UN to even declare that genocide was occuring. The UN seems unwilling to do anything against a nation with muslims in it. They are scared to act.

Are you proposing we run in with 5 division we dont have to spare and call up a draft so your son can go fight this war or peace keeping mission?

What do you think we should do?

We have brought it to the attention of the free world and the free world has chosen to ignore it.

You dont think Europe is going to be interested in attacking a Muslim Country do you. Europe is using Muslims for cheap slave labor and they do not want to upset them.
