I think its time I get a new harddrive. My 10gb drive is running out of space. Im not gonna be able to get the drive until after xmas but im not sure which brand drive to get.
I want a 30GB 7200rpm ATA 100 drive. Im pretty sure I dont want an IBM GXP drive with all the problems they are having. Im sure its a really fast drive but there is just something wrong with it. Im looking at Maxtor, Quantum, Seagate, WD. Im not sure which drive and from what company to get. Your ideas will be most appriciated.

There really isn't a problem with the IBM gxp drives. I have a 45gb one myself and it is by far the fastest and quietest ide drive that I have ever used. Everything that I want to do loads so quickly and the computer boots faster than my previous drives. You can look at the other thread in this forum about the IBM drives, almost no one is having trouble with the IBM drives and if they are it's usually fixed with a small patch. If you are really persistent and really don't like IBM, then I would go with the Quantum if price is a big issue or if not then I would recommend buying the Maxtor for a couple bucks more.

In the end, I really think you get what you pay for and the IBM drives are worth the extra costs over the other brands.

All I keep hearing about is people having to RMA there IBM harddrive. And people hearing all kinds of scratching noises from the drive then it dies. I would rather not deal with whatever problem those drives oviously have. If you havent had any problems with that drive then mabey you are lucky or your time is yet to come. Anyway im thinking of getting a maxtor. Ive had good experiences with them. But im still open to opinions. And I dont want to start a fight about the IBM drives. I just dont think I want that drive.

No, get Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 30GB or Quantum Fireball Plus AS 30GB. 20GB platters, both faster than 75GXP.

for $160, you could probably get a Maxtor Diamond Plus ATA 100 40/60 gb hard drive.
I currently have a 20gb maxtor Diamnondmax Plus ATA66 and a 40gb maxtor Diamnondmax Plus ATA100. They run like a charm, and the quality is excellent.

I just got a Diamond MAX 45 Plus 30.7 GB drive from Best Buy for $139.99. It is 7200 RPM 2MB buffer ATA100. Man does that sucker fly.

Well, I've got 5 IDE maxtor 20 Gig drives in a server and have never had a problem with them, they've been running about a year. I have a maxtor 27 gig that had bad sectorsafter about 9 months, RMAed that. I also have another maxtor 20 in a workstation, and have never had a problem with that one. Of the about 15 maxtor hard drives I've had in the last 2 years, I only had a problem with one. Maxtor is usually the cheapest, but I also have alot of respect for IBM and Quantum. Seagates are alright. Western Digital stay away from. At the company I used to work for %90 of the drives we replaced were Western Digital. It's not because we only sold Western Digital, we only sold Quantum.

Maxtor 60 Plus drives just arrived at a local CompUSA here, may want to wait a bit longer until they reach where you are.

The 45 uses 15GB platters the 60 uses 20GB platter..... The high GB platters usually are faster drives.

EDIT:Guess I spent too much time before hitting reply someone beat me :)

If you want a hot deal on a fast drive, get the Quantum 30 Gig from Buy.com. $138 - $30 coupon - $30 rebate = $78 with free shipping.

Well, generally the IBM drives are the most recommended. All the problems you heard of were probably about the IBM rma policy issue. In short, IBM are really tight@$$ about their replacement policy. If you don't buy retail from them, they won't replace the drive for you.

Maxtor on the other hand makes drives that are comparable in speed and quality. Though usually a little cheaper. Their replacement policy is a lot looser. They are known to replace your drive no matter what.

If you aren't going to grab the IBM drive, then turn to the Maxtor. I've had great experiences with Maxtor and recently just bought a 45gb 7200rpm and an 80.1gb 5400 rpm drive. In total, I probably have 5 Maxtors, and never had problems with them. I also have one IBM, and that has no problems either. Quantum and Western Digital I have had problems with, the Quantum recently, and the WD around 3 years ago.

I currently swear by Maxtor. The improvement in speed for the IBM's aren't worth the price increase in my book.

I've got an IBM 7200RPM ata66 drive 20gb from about a year ago .. its a quiet and fast drive .. and then i've got dial Maxtor diamond max 40 30GB drives in a raid 0 partition as well ... and even though they are only the 5400 rpm variety ... they are pretty quick . I've also got an older 13gb maxtor in my second box (its a 7200rpm .. but its slower then either of my 5400rpm 30gb'ers) ... I'd say if you want top of the line .. get the IBM ... cause its supposedly a bit faster ... otherwise get the 7200rpm Maxtor.

I hate Quantum because of those Quantum biigfoot drives that sucked a lot ..
and i don't like western digital because they don't have a very good history with drives lasting long ..

Seagate makes great drives ... and they are really easy to RMA if it becomes necessary ... but they are really more concentraded on SCSI drives ... so i dunno if i'd get a seagate IDE drive.

What's the "best" ~30 GB HDD in terms of price, quality, and speed?

oldfart: does buy.com still have free shipping? Are quantums as good as maxtors and GXP's? (by the way, i love your name!)

In terms of price performance I would say the Maxtor 7200 ATA100 is the fastest for the price if you turn off acoustic managment (Which to me made no noticable difference in noise).

Can I turn off acoustical managment with my current maxtor drive? If so how do I do it? And did you notice any speed difference?
