I don't know about your brother. Maybe he got unlucky cause I have owned over 3 WD drives and they've been good to me, my family and friends. But yeah, it's good to hear about these experiences. Helps pinpoint what you want.

I would go with Samsung in a heartbeat. Seagates have a 5 year warranty whereas Samsung only has 3, but the Samsungs are super quiet and still nice performers. I've got WD, Samsung, Maxtor, Seagate, and the Samsung is outstanding in every way.
