Can anyone give me any suggestions for which ide hard drive I should get? I have been looking at the wd 80 gig hdd and the maxtor 80 gig hdd (both 7200 rpm) can anyone tell me which of the two is the better one to buy? and can anyone give any other recommendations? Do the ibm 60gxp go any higher than 60 gigs? I don't really need 80 gigs, 40 or 60 would probably suffice, so if anyone can make any recommendations please do so

I've been researching hdd's recently too. From what I've been told, IBM has had some problems lately. From personal experience and reading other posts, I know that Western Digitals are generally very quiet. I have two WD 7200 rpm drives that are almost completely silent. I suggest you go with the western digital.

Just don't get a maxtor
They are pretty much junk

Not any more, their new drives are very nice.

The latest IBM/Maxtor drives are pretty much a toss-up as far as which is best.

I have Maxtor and IBM I would prefer IBM over Maxtor. IBM is the best in my opinion right now.

Who cares what brand people prefer.. Go buy the cheapest fastest one.

According to many reviews (including theirs), Maxtor 60 GB-7200 RPM is very fast, faster than most other drives, and costs not all that much..

Modern 7200 RPM drives are very, very quiet. If you want it to be quieter, look into SilentDrive enclosures.

I'm building a system with a 60GXP for a friend, & it will be inside a SilentDrive. Only two fans in the system (one 21 db P/S fan, one 16.5 db CPU fan), & HD noise will be reduced by 90%.

Can we say dead silent?
