What Hard Drive Imaging Software do you use?

Where I work we use Norton Ghost for reimaging people's computers back to their 'virgin' state when the fsck them up. But that's really done over the network, so I'm not sure if that program work as well restoring off of DVDs or BDs. Basically I'm getting a new hard disc, and when I do I'm installing windows, office, and a few other programs that I use frequently. I want to be able to take a 'snapshot' of it at this point, and at any point in the future be able to wipe out the drive entirely and restore that snapshot.

Acronis True Image Home 2010 Recovery CD. I don't like installing it directly on my system. I don't need the real time imaging. If I could turn off all the unnecessary services I would gladly install it.

Haven't switched to the latest because of all the problems I been hearing and don't feel like re-imaging all over again.

What version of Windows, e.g. Windows 7 Professional or ??? You may be able to create a system image using nothing more than the built-in backup utility in Windows.

i used to use truimage... but ever since i found clonezilla i have never looked back.

clonezilla is always free and ready to burn to a cd. it doesnt have a pretty gui or thousands of features, but it does what its supposed to do, and without headaches. i have never had one issue at all using clonezilla, it just works

Does it have a recovery cd ?

Does it have a recovery cd ?

According to the Clonezilla website, that must be done with Clonezilla Live. That has its own set of limitations. Further, Clonezilla cannot do general proportional cloning. The target drive must be equal to or larger than the source drive.

Here are Clonezilla's stated limitations:

"Limitations:
o- The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one.
o- Differential/incremental backup is not implemented yet.
o- Online imaging/cloning is not implemented yet. The partition to be imaged or cloned has to be unmounted.
o- Software RAID/fake RAID is not supported by default. It's can be done manually only.
o- Due to the image format limitation, the image can not be explored or mounted. You can _NOT_ recovery single file from the image. However, you still have workaround to make it, read this.
o- Recovery Clonezilla live with multiple CDs or DVDs is not implemented yet. Now all the files have to be in one CD or DVD if you choose to create the recovery iso file. "

I like True Image.
I have read somewhere that Acronis has added New Windows 7 Integration to enable seamless integration into the Windows control panel.

Got tired of Acronis workstation not properly re-allocating MBR's to reflect changed HDD sizes and went back to Ghost 8. Still works like a charm, just won't do RAID.

you know what... this does look like the best option. this new pc that im giving to a family member, i want to have an easy way to restore it back to the way they got it from me- for when they inevitably screw it up with viruses.

win7's image tool is stupid easy... it looks like it will work just fine. can span multiple dvd's too.

thanks for the suggestion, it was right there all along.
