What hard drive for OS only?

What's your budget?

You likely don't have SCSI, and a Raptor may be out of your price range. If so, I'd pick up a ~$100 Seagate 7200 RPM drive and be done with it.

Oh, just incase you don't know what I mean, a Raptor is a 10,000 RPM Serial ATA drive which is more expensive than a "regular" drive that will likely be 7200 RPM. If you don't know what SCSI is, you don't have it and you don't need it. ;)

I should have given more info, I have a Maxtor 160 ultra now and want a 2nd HD just for OS, will the raptor improve my performance and what is the smallest I should use for windows XP and a few basic programs.

for windows XP and a few basic programs you could easily get by with a 36GB Raptor
and yes speed does matter... infact it's the most important thing overall when you already have a fast system overall.
