Im guessing you doing this to find out the most reliable harddrive..

ATM i would say Western Digital so if you are looking go for that.

I've Had to RMA 3 Maxtors (a 30gb, a 40Gb, and a 10gb)
I've had to RMA 3 IBMs (2 x 75GXP, and a 20gb deskstar)
I've had to RMA 1 WD (an old 6.4GB drive)

Then Again I have owned the most Maxtor drives (about a dozen or so over the years)
I have owned SCSI seagate drives and one IDE seagate, never had one fail
used to have a Quantim drive, never failed
Never really bought much WD stuff until their SE drives came about, havent had a problem with any of them
In General I have had the worst luck With IBM ... hopefully the drives I got back from RMAs continue to work ok.

bjc112 well you can't ever really tell :)

That's true, you can never really tell. And I am not sure a poll will help give more reliable answers :) I have never had to RMA a drive. I don't count the one time I bought an older Maxtor for $5.00 because I knew it was damaged and could RMA it, as it was still under warranty. Some people seem to have terrible luck with certain drives, some people (like me) seem to have great luck with any drive. I still have working Maxtors, Western Digitals and a Seagate or two that are less than 1GB.

1 famous IBM that I got the exact same model back, grrrrr!
1 seagate that was my fault, kinda touched a couple wires together and killed it, don't ask (Don't wire cold cathods with the computer running:eek:)

You obviously are a home user w/ little "real word" experience. I've sold and used just about every mfg's HDD's, and they all fail or develop problems. Just because you have had to RMA a particular drive a few times does not warrant the classification of junk IMHO.

None.

My first WD 4 gig died 1.5 years after I got it and I didn't know I could RMA

My Maxtor 20 gig is still chugging along after 3 years just fine

My current WD 80gig SE hd is doing just great.

IN terms of reliability I would rate them as follows.

Over the past five years

Seagate
Maxtor
WD
IBM

I do not have enough experience with Samsung or fujitisu but I must mention I used to use quite a few fujitsu drives and was quite happy with them

As for IBM the deathstars were a problem but lately, I have had good experiences with them.

Currently I use maxtor is most builds but sometimes seagate though they are often a bit pricier. I must state however that WD remain very popular, and while not many actually bite the dust, many do develope naggin problems with whines etc.

Since I got my first HDD in about 1986, I have had to RMA only two out of about 25 drives. That was one Seagate and one IBM. 75% of my drives are IBM/Hitachi, and have presented no problems at all.

I have resurrected several "kaput" drives with various maladies - most of which involved bent over pins.

Drive cooling and maintenance are factors to be considered. I also go over my drives with Steve Gibson's SpinRite program. Been using that since about 1987. If drives are taken care of, the chances are that they will last through obsolescence. Usually 2-3 years. :)

i voted none even though my first hdd bit the dust (my first 7200 rpm 40 gig from maxtor + 5 gigs free so 45 gig drive) bought some 4+ ( iirc )years ago and it is under warranty till dec of this year.

it has survived a p166 a p-3 500 a p-3 866 a p-4 1.5 and p-4 2.4 and it was tried in the p-4 2.8 only the 2.8 and 1.5 are around anymore

i'd say it performed like a champ as i never shut down my computer as well as d/l demos etc all the time

kudos to maxtor

I think taht the poll may not be very accurate because it also depends on how many people use those drives. If 100 people use maxtor drives, and 4 report RMA's, and 8 people report WD RMA's of the 300 that bought them, then its not very helpful because 8 out of 300 is less than 4 out of 100. I don't think it'll make that big of a differencein the results, but I thought I'd share.

Some years ago I was RMA'ing Champion hard drives everytime I turned around. I quickly learned not to build systems with those. In more recent times, I've RMA'd a couple of Seagate drives. At present, in terms of reliability, I prefer Western Digital and Maxtor.

All I can recommend is if you go with a WD, make sure it is/was a new drive, not a refurb/from RMA.
My (purchased-new) 80gig SE has been great :D
