What happens with the next generation of cards from nVidia

It might be confusing having 8800/8600/8200 type cards from nVidia while there may still be the possibility of 8500's being around from a looong time ago.
With the 7 series it's not too much of a thing because the Radeon 7xxx were named that in retrospect, and were not really that big, but the 8500/9xxx cards were kind of the resurgance of ATi, and it's what nVidia's going to be coming up to naming wise, so are they going to continue with it and possibly confuse people, or change their naming scheme or what?

Dont think they bother with having similarities with ATi cards...

If anybody is dumb enough to think they are getting an ATI 8500 for 500 bucks they got what is coming to them.

I do not think it will be confusing to people. These cards will come out next year and the 8500 will likely be long gone. The NVidia cards will likely be the 8800, 8600, and 8200 which should not be confused with the ATI 8500.

Is it really possible for the modeling numbering scheme to get more complicated? I mean, the developers can only GT PE XT2 Ultra5 SE to so many cards before the joke they're playing on us gets old.

That's their entire line having exactly the same names as ATi's products (although it'll be 4 generations old by that time, and Rollo will still be saying whatever their new card is is just a rehash no doubt ), which would be a bit silly (although it's still a year off).

Oh, I agree. If the NVidia 9800 came out this year, there might be some confusion as there are plenty of ATI 9800s still around. I just got rid of my 9800 in June. But since NVidia's 9800 *might* come out in two years (let's say 2007) and ATI's 9800 came out in 2003, I think that very few people will be confused.

Of course, I do wonder where ATI is going with their naming structure......

What's funny is if Ati continued the pattern and we had:

x1800... x2800... x3800... (x4200, x4600, x4800)... ...x9800... and then what?

Looks like both Nv and Ati cards are just following each others names in one vicious cycle!

Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious too. Barring a radical shakeup at the marketing department at Nvidia, I'm assuming their next series will be GeForce 8.

I think 2007 is optimistic. GeForce 8 isn't even going to be out until sometime in 2006, so I wouldn't even wager a guess on when GF9 will be out, yet.

5800 - Jan 2003
6800 - Apr 2004
7800 - June 2005
8800 - Aug 2006 ???
9800 - Oct 2007 ???

New cards seem to be coming out every 15 months or so. Of course, who really knows when the NVidia cards will come out, or even what they will be called.

from what i can remember Ati started this 4 digit x000 nomenclature with the radeon 8500. at that time nvidia was using the ti xxx nomenclature with the gf3 ti series.

Wont ATI make the R600 seriers cards 10x00 because they are DX10, because thats what they did with the 7x00 8x00 9x00 Xx00 X1x00 (last 3 gen are DX9)? Atleast thats what I think what they are doing.
