What happens when you reverse the wires in speakers?

nope, it just reverses the phase, and you can cancel the speakers out. (if one is the opposite way as the other)

So if both are one way, it's ok.

But if both are reversed, it'll work but sound like crap?

If one is reversed, there won't be any sound?

It will be reduced at the very least, as the waves will cancel out.

Actually, if your ears are not "tuned", you won't even notice that the wires are switched. But if you got a set of left and right and one is switched, you'll know right away. I remember having to do some in walls install, and I couldn't tell which wires were which, so I just hooked it up and listen really hard.

You can check polarity with a 9v battery. Attach the wire leads to the terminals of the battery, and the speaker will pop. IIRC it will move outward if + wire is on + terminal, and inward if they are reversed. It's been a while since I did this though, so get a 2nd opinion incase I remember incorrectly.

And yes, they will sound terrible if the wires are reversed. In some very limited scenarios for subwoofers it is actually desirable though. I had a setup that required this in my old Continental a few years back, and it sounded sweet.
