What happens when you put a higher viscosity oil than the manual recommends for your car

Not really. In fact after 10K I tell people to start using 5w30 or 10w30. 5w20 is a gimick to save money for auto makers.
 
Essentially, nothing.



Though, you're best off for a number of other reasons, to simply use the recommended oil in your motor based on your climate.




Outside of that....................remember that THE .......MOST ..........IMPORTANT .........THING ........ABOUT .......MOTOR ........OIL ...........IS ........THAT .........YOU .......

CHANGE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little more fuel consumption going from 5w20 to 5w30. That's about it. If you used a 10w or 20w, you might get a little more engine wear on cold starts because it's slower to pump.
