What happens when you push CPU too far?

Destroys CPU, that's a given. Will system shutdown? Is fire a possibility? I cranked my Barton 2500+ to 3200+ (2.2GHz with 200FSB) and while monitoring it, it went happily along at ~50C. However, it's running full throttle on DC project and I'm not near it tonight. Will the building still be standing tomorrow?

it will just shutdown. if it gets too hot it will shutdown. it can also get unstable if you oc it.

Barton 2500+ going 3200+ is not that uncommon and 50C is nothing. It'll be fine. If it gets to hot, it usually shuts down. Just get like a SLK900a/u...and a 90mm fan and some AS5 and you'll be fine. BTW..good job :D

Your computer may crash or shut down because of the heat. Probably won't die if you don't bump the voltage at all.

You'd best be trying to run a Prime95 torture test to see if the CPU is stable or not. Many 2500+ can't run at 3200+ and pass Prime95.

Fire isnt possible because of safetys built into motherboards to shutdown over certain temps.

Edit: it is also very unlikely that the cpu will be damaged as long as you didnt increase the vcore.

or you will set the overclock and your pc wont boot, then you'll have to clear the cmos.

No change in vcore. Not only did it boot, but loaded Windows Server 2003 (from CD to new hard drive) and ran Folding@Home (100% CPU utilization) for an hour before I left. Guess I got a really good one? Plus, I have a HUGE solid copper heatsink with a 7KRPM fan plus an Antec True Power PSU that has an extra fan that blows on CPU.

That extra fan actually pulls air away from the CPU. But yeah, seems as though some people have had trouble getting their XP2500's to 2.2 Ghz (although 4 out of the 5 I've had have done 2.2 Ghz on default voltage, only my week 7 needed more)... so I'd say you have a decent setup.
