just wondering, would you be in any trouble (except from the car dealer of course) if you crash a car when you go on a test drive? i've been wanting to test drive so i can practice driving, plus i've aleays wanted to drive some new cars...

Umm....If you need to "practice driving", I wouldn't suggest doing so in brand new $20k+ cars that you don't even own...

This is why car dealerships normally take a photocopy of your drivers license and/or car insurance.
You wreck it - you pay. If you can't pay they probably sue your ass, go after you in court and their insurance pays to fix it.
Heh, I practiced driving a 5-speed on a brand new Honda Accord on a test drive (I'd had a couple lessons previously). I stalled a couple times, but no accidents. I ended up getting the same model (though not that same car...poor clutch! )

A test drive isn't the place to learn how to drive a stick.

I once had the top come off of a T-Top 300ZX @ about 70 mph on a test drive.
Amazingly enough it survived several bounces on the pavement before landing in a ditch. I put it back on (only then discovering what the dealer neglected to tell me - it wouldn't latch properly) and drove back VERY carefully. Told them it "wasn't for me" and got the hell out of there.

actually the dealer will teach u if u r consider buyin a car.... at least the Audi dealer around me...

My first car was a stick 83 Honda. I had never ever driven stick and neither of my parents had owned a stick car in my life... I had a friend that knew how to drive manual come with me. I bought it from the guy for $500 and drove it home.
It's not that hard.
While the vehicle is on the dealer's lot, insurance does not cover it (atleast here in Oklahoma). I always ask the rep to drive it off the lot and then we trade drivers.
When I was filling out paperwork for my Eclipse, a lady rearended a brand new vehicle into a light pole on the lot. Apparently, she was just going for a test drive. The guys inside all said that she would be paying for it.
