What happens when the air filter in a car falls off?

Chances are no major damage will occur if the air filter is off the car for short periods of time.

have a nice day! :)

haha, that reminds me of that episode of Home Improvement where the kid drops a marble into the block of his dads car, then his older brothers show him a video of a huge auto accident saying, "this is what happens when you drop a marble down there."

Think about it. It isn't rocket science.

When your oil gets full of dust and dirt, it doesen't lubricate anymore.. It becomes grinding compound.

Heh.. that reminds me, some idiot mechanic disconnected the pcv hose that goes to the air cleaner housing, and didn't plug the nipple that the hose hooked up to!

He's been driving for the last 25,000 miles basically with a 1/2" hole in his air filter. :|

well... if you try driving a 1000 miles like that... you'll need an engine rebuild

Actually I my question should've been "How do I know if my intake has a leak and if dust starts getting in what would the symptons be"

I installed a new intake and the adapter between the cone filter and the MAFS doesn't seal completely. I used electrical to secure all the leaks . It doesn't look as ghetto as it sounds.

It is not as big a deal as you think. My '66 SHelby has the downdraft Webber carbs on it and they have NO AIR FILTERS.....as there are none available that retain the oroginal look....on top of the fact that they would not fit. I have never run an air cleaner on this engine since it was rebuilt. At about 15K miles I pulled the engine apart due to some valves saying hello to Mr. Piston at 8000 RPM and there was little or no wear on the internals....at least no more than one would expect. Now, I am carefull where I drive this car (no dusty construction zones) and I do change the oil every 1500 miles but casual driving without an air cleaner is hardly anything to get all worked up about.

The words, "My '66 SHelby" fill me with envy. Can I live vicariously through some pics?

Only if you suck a really bony squirrel in or something :D Its not that bad for a while unless he lives in the desert or something, change the oil and put a new filter on.

I wish I could oblige, but believe it or not I don't actually have any pictures of this car except some really poor regular photos that were taken 15 years ago when I bought it. I have a digital camera now, but unfortunately the car is locked away in storage at the moment due to lack of space around here.
