What happens when setting up wireless router?

I'm trying to know how to do all this. I think I know how to set this up correct me if I'm wrong.

1.) Hook Wireless Router into port 2 on my Modem. (Port 1 is in use.)

2.) Hook up my USB adapter.

3.) Install the software and drivers for the USB Adapter.

Now if I do all of this will Windows automatically detect a connection or will I have to consult with ISP? Also If I get this router with this adapter will it be able to go around 50 feet and through 3 walls and still play my games without a lot of lag?

1. If it's a wireless router, hook into it (before plugging into the rest of the network) and disable DHCP, set an IP that is on the same subnet your router dishes, but is not in the same scope it serves. Configure SSID, Encryption, etc. Plug from LAN port of router to LAN port on AP (Wireless router)
3. Configure your wireless settings to match what you put on the AP, i.e. same SSID, same encrpytion key, etc.

WoW I have no idea on how to do any of this. Do you think my ISP could come out and do it?

Hi,

I bought a linksys router like the one you linked recently, not sure if its the exact same one, but its darn close if not.

The router wants you to plug in a direct ethernet connection so that you can "fiddle" with it directly. So I plugged in the PC that was next to the wireless router/cable modem LAN style (I was gonna do this anyways, its only my gaming PC's that need the wireless connection). Turned everything on, and everything was looking good. I wanted to do the easysetup security stuff, so I tried to fiddle with that, but it didn't seem to make a difference at that point.

I then went into the office, put in the PCI cards (I am not fond of the USB wireless adapters because of past history with my sister's wireless network that I set up using them, they seem to need "resetting" a lot aka full power offs of everything). I then saw that they detected 3 wireless networks in my house (2 of them netgear, so I knew it wasn't mine heh). None were secure. This really, really, made me want to secure mine. I could get on the internet at this point. I fiddled with the security page on the router from the PC directly connected, and got it to "go" at this point. At this point, I went back to the office to try to get these 2 back online, no luck. Very VERY annoying. The easysetup stuff isn't that easy. Tried this about 10 times... Pushing the button on the front of the router, blah blah blah. No difference. Finally I tried resetting the security AGAIN, and then directly input that massively long key "191724ajoasdh912479a (example)" into my 2 wireless PC's, and voila', I was back online. Perhaps I'm a moron, but I followed the instructions as best I could...

This older PC only gets 4 bars of connectivity, while my newer (and farther away) PC gets 5 bars... don't ask me.

Only thing that worries me is using different brand adapters from the router. I'm sure it'd work, but getting it secure might be tougher.

Good luck to you.

So if I got a Linksys PCI Adapter and just pluged everything in it will work and will windows detect it automatically?

It's not as bad as you think it is. You just need to take it slowly.

Here's how I would proceed:
1. Power on the wireless router, but do not connect the router to your modem.
2. Connect an ethernet cable from your router to your pc.
3. Crack open your router manual, find the default ip address it's located on.
4. Open that ip address on your brower, this should let you configure your router.
5. Configure the login information, make sure firewall is on, set security and wireless encryption.
6. Familarize yourself with all the options.
7. Install your usb adapter, install drivers, set up configuration so that the settings are the same as router.
8. Check that the usb adapter can connect to wireless router.
9. Unplug ethernet that was plug in at step 2.
10. It should work, if not repeat steps until you find a mistake. :)

Lots of steps, but it'll be easy when you see everything and hopefully the router configuration is laid out in a straight forward manner. I also suggest that you also read up on security and make sure that you have all the settings done properly.

Is the login information the one fprovided with ISP or a different one?

Also I need the router to go downstairs by the internet connection while my PCI Adapter goes upstairs with my gaming rig. (in sig)

Its really not that bad, one thing I remember is I had to power off my computers (the wireless ones) AFTER I made the security changes for them to "see" the "new" changes I made on the router. This is why I kept banging my head 10 times trying to get them to communicate. I was trying to input the "new" info, and it was still thinking of the old, and they wouldn't match, and it wouldn't connect.

But you do need a direct lan connection to the router (the router comes with a cat-5 cable for this purpose). The linksys router I have has a IP address of 192.168.1.1, which is pretty standard. Using that directly connected PC, you type that IP address into IE or whatever browser, and log in (default password is "admin", no user name required).

I only have experience with DSL, and you will need to use the login information the ISP provided you. If you've set up a wired router, it's almost the same.

If the router is not in the same room, I suggest you set the router up in the same room until you get wireless working. :) You don't need a connection to the modem until things are configured and wireless works.

The ISP has nothing to do with this usually. (Usually).

You will need a PC that you can connect directly to the wireless router (it has a 4 port switch on the back). So you will need a PC close by your modem/router to set it up.

Yea I am putting my gaming rig like 50 feet away through 3 walls. So how will I know if the wireless is working?

Do you have a PC already near the modem/router place?

You need a setup similar to this:

Internet<---->DSL/Cable Modem<--Cat5-->((Wireless Router))<--Cat5-->LAN connected PC

((Wireless Adapter))<--USB or PCI card-->Gaming Rig

Excuse the crude text technique.

The LAN connected PC could be your gaming rig temporarily, once you set up the router, you can then move it to where you want it. I'd set up the wireless connection while still directly connected (if that is possible, I think it should be) and then move it to your room.

The walls/distance shouldn't be a problem. Like I said, I got signals from 2 neighbors networks (at around 50% signal).

Alright so I have a dell set up in my office connected to port 1 on my modem. I believe it doesn't have a router. So If I buy a router you want me to connect he router from the router to the PC? The modem is right by the Dell.

I know what you mean and how to set it up now. All I'm worried about is installing the network. Will the software autamaticaly create a connection for IE? Or will I have to do this manually?
