what happens when 1st gear let's go in a GTR

it was bound to happen with the amount of power I'm making and the abuse I put the car through (around 150 launches, 75 or so on drag radials)

trans will be pulled Monday... for those familiar with transmission builders, I'll be going with an Iveytune 1.5+ w/ billet baskets... got a smoking deal on it from another GTR owner

the transmission going in will be able to handle over 1000 ft/lb of torque and has been proven to run mid 8s... I.e. give me headroom to grow into it as I upgrade the car more

now for some pictures... cause I know we all love pictures

The term 'something's gotta give' applies there 🙂

How many launches do you think the stock tranny is good for at stock power?

with stockish tires, it should be designed for close to infinite life.

Make big changes anywhere in the drive system, and the above will happen.

that's not necessarily true... I'm the first one to break 1st gear since they've released LC4+ (now on LC6)... so first in ~3years

but my car is not the norm in many ways... I tend to push the envelope with my car (hence my quarter mile times being #1 for stock turbo, pump gas)

but your car isn't stock?

for example:

a transmission that can take the load on street tires, can easily be broken on drags.

This is where pay to play comes in. I love the GT-R, but could never afford the maintenance even if I was given one for free. LS V8s otoh can take stupid abuse and be rebuilt fairly cheap, trannies are easy to come by, everything is cake to work on. It's apples/oranges, as the AWD super high tech GT-R is a different animal altogether.

Sucks bro. Good that you've got new parts lined up already and the bank to make it happen. After the trans is upgraded what's the next weak link? Joints, diff, rods,....??

rods -- after 650awtq (won't happen until turbo upgrade... I won't upgrade turbos w/o basic rod/piston motor rebuild)

diff -- a couple very high hp gtrs have broken it (1500+ awhp ones)... a mitigating mod is a transmission brace that connects the rear diff to the trans housing... I'll have one if these on mine now for extra insurance. diff housings are super expensive

axles -- many people stick with stock axles... they will break before the diff. they are fairly cheap (I have an entire spare set of OEM axles)

So your right up there at that fine line......... keep on with your bad self until she pops then it'll be 1000hp time.

I'd like to just go for a ride in one of these GT-R's some day. Sadly haven't even sat in one.

transmission came in last friday ... I'll be picking up the car sometime this week (stupid snow has delayed this... car still has drag radials on it!)
