What happens to your brain when you have a headache?

Do you lose brain cells or is something else happening in your brain that causes the pain?

/me has a headache right now.

I believe the blood pressure in your blood vessels increases, inflicting pressure on the brain. Not positive though. Headaches suck though.

I think that's one of the theories. It's my impression that they don't really know exactly why you get a headache.

I always thought it had to do with swelling of the brain. Thats why medications such as Non-Steriodal Anti-Inflammitory's like Ibuprofen (motrin), Naproxen (aleve) work so well in getting rid of headaches. Thats just my guess.

i thought it was the muscles and vessels surounding ur skull...i dont think there are any pain receptors in ur brain

Most headaches are caused by muscles in your neck and head, yes there are muscles in your pulling down on your skull which causes pressure hence the pain.
