what happens to utility bills if you rent, and then you leave?

say you rent a place in NYC, then leave the apt, move to CA...

The gas and electricity bills comes to you... (so in the ex. the landlord doesn't cover these as part of the rent) they are under your name...

but like i said you're off to CA...


Does that landlord get forced by the gas and electric company, backed by law, to pay for you... out of his / her own pocket?


or is it not the landlord's responsibility.

yes that i see clearly... the landlord would let the utilities know to revert the name assigned to the meter, back under that of the landlord..

but wondering about the bill that will be mailed to the tenant...

No. Any bill would be sent to the last known address if no forwarding is available. They (landlord) switch the account back into their name. The utility company puts you in collections if not paid.

yeap when you move out the utilites get put in the landlords name. If you do not pay for what you owe they put you in collections.

i really fail to see what is hard to understand about this.

The landlord I dont believe will be held for it you will and if you dont pay in some cases can make it to your credit report. If that happends and you switch again and that new utility company pulls your report and sees that there may cause you to put up a fat deposit before they will turn you on (the utilities perverts).

Your question was answered above. I can see skipping a state for gambling debts, but leaving behind a couple hundred utility bills is a pretty lame reason 🙂

call the utility company, and inform that as of whenever date, you will no longer be living there, so please send the final bill to your new address and either turn off the utilities or direct any bills to your landlord.
