What happens to the net if the USA was unplugged?

This was inspired bya thread over in off topic. If the USA was somehow disconnected 100% from the internet, what do you think the impact on the internet at large would be? Total meltdown of the global network, loss of many services but survivable, or little to no effect for other folks?
 
I'm gonna go out on a limb here when I say this....

But given all the redundancy and variety of physical mediums that connect the US to the rest of the world, if something bad enough were to happen to completely 100% shut us off then the Internet would probably be the least of the worries we'd have.

However, not all the backbones that connect the world go through the US. The remaining Internet would probably stay up, but it'd probably suck to try to use it.

One day they should throw the breaker and see how well all that BGP routing stuff works out. :beer:
