What happens if you miss a field goal attempt on first down?

Depends. If you kick it, and an onside player (behind the ball when it was kicked) runs downfield and gets it, then your team gets the ball at that spot with a first down if it went more than 10 yards. Usually though the other team just gets it.

Yeah, that's not a trivial task. I think I've only seen an onsides kick work once or twice in all my years of watching football. You never see anyone kick it real high when they try for an onsides kick, though. Always wondered about that.

If it gets blocked and your guys get back on it you get a another kick on second down. If you get off an attempt and miss its the other teams ball.

You can't, thats why they spike it into the ground on an onside kick in an attempt to make it bounce really high.
