What happens if you have a HT Receiver and only 2 speakers?

Is the HT Receiver smart enough to mix all 4.1 channels into 2 speakers when you watch a DVD?

mm... i think so if you remember to select the 2 speaker option if you have that. but i think the point of having surround sound is the discrete sounds coming from the speakers matching the content on the t.v. whats the point of 4.1 if its all jumbled together anyway. you won't be getting 4.1 channels.

Eventually I will have 4 or 4.1 speakers but initially I might only use 2 because I'm lazy and don't want to run speaker wires and drilling speaker mounts into the wall (for the rear speakers) yet.

But I kind of want a HT Receiver now to use as a video switch (because my TV doesn't have as many video input jacks as I would like).

its totally fine. and you can run it with one speaker even, that would be mono. I'm aware of mono, stereo, 3 speaker surround (front 2, + center), 4.1 (front two, rear surrounds are giving same sounds, center, and sub), and 5.1 (all 5 distinct).
