What happens if you don't pay your tuition?

So last semester I went to a state college but decided to go to a junior college this semester so I could have an easier time transferring to a better university. I was on the college's deferred payment plan, which allowed you to pay your tuition in smaller monthly payments rather than in one large payment. I never paid the last month of the semester's bill, though, because 1) I didn't care if they were going to put a hold on my school records or wouldn't let me register for classes since I knew I wasn't going to attend there the following semester, and 2) since my GPA for that semester was kinda low (about a 2.5ish), and they put a hold on my records, they will not release any of my academic info until I pay off my balance (about $500). This would be great for me since the colleges I'll be applying to transfer to won't be able to count those grades into my transferrable GPA.

Anyways, so last week I received a letter from them that I'll need to pay off the amount I owe by the end of this week or they'll "release information concerning this indebtedness to a collection agency to collect [my] past due balance."

So I was wondering, what would a collection agency exactly do if I decide not to pay? And will this affect my credit score? If so, by how much?

they will do exactly what you said. Goes to a collection agency which then tries to collect from you and if you dont good by credit score.

Colleges count transfer grades toward your GPA? Mine didn't. It doesn't make sense to do that.

Also, you're an idiot.

they will probably sell your 500 bucks in debt for 300 bucks to a collections agency, then you will get harassing phone calls for the next couple years until you pay 500. that and your credit will take a hit.

I don't believe that education debts follow the same standard "7-year" rule that applies to businesses; I'm pretty sure that you get screwed indefinitely or, at least, for a very long time for not paying bills to colleges/college loans.

i don't think you can "erase" them with bankruptcy either.

On second thought, the OP sounds like exactly the kind of person who deserves to have that happen to him.

Stay the course, OP. They'll give up on collecting their money without a fight.

on a side note...my cable company screwed me over once. I went to japan and right before I left i called them and asked if i owed anything...they said I didn't. I come back 3 months later and not two days later i get a called from a credit agency saying they want me to pay them. I call the cable company and the agency and i got the bill paid and everyhitng (it sucked like an hour of bs). Is my credit score hurt because of this? I totally asked them 2 days before I left if i had any bills to pay for them and they said no...

No offense, but you are why debt collection agencies exist.

If you ever want to buy a car, a house, anything where you take out a loan, you're going to lose a lot more than $500.
