What happens if you deposit a check that has been 'voided' after a certain date

I found a rebate check stashed in a drawer for $15 that says void after 11-27-2004.

What will happen if I still deposit it?

UPDATE 12/28/04

So I got the check back in the mail and it says "STALE DATE" on it and explains that the moeny was not deposited. :(

I thought it was a scheme for rebate companies so that they could make money of of people that didnt deposit it fast enough. I guess I will give it a try and see what happens.

If the check processes, don't bank on keeping the money because it will get back to the rebate companies. They will then file a complaint against the bank to prove the check met all the standards, which it shouldn't because checks with void dates on them ARE actually void after whenever they say they are. The check should then be reversed.
I think this would be similar to the story of the $95k check.

Well - I just went to the nearby ATM and deposited it. We'll see what happens.

Anybody else have any experience with it?

I'll assume it won't be honoured. Most rebate cheques give you 6 months to cash it in. So you snooze, you lose.

IIRC, the only way a completed check is void is if it is destroyed. Even writing "VOID" on it does not invalidate it.

Deposit it and stick it to the rebate companies. Probably just another tactic to get people to not get their money back.

i've tried to deposit checks in the past like this, and not only were they not honored, but i was fined an extra $20 for processing
