Well that was my understanding, but some people we're saying that if you broke your iPhone and just switched to an older phone, you can get them to change it. Sounded weird.

I think maybe I misunderstood what you were asking. You are specifically talking about the data portion of the plan?
So you would switch to a non-smartphone and keep the contract but not the data portion of it?
I"m not sure how AT&T does it but I think you could do it on VZW.
