Um... what? The data plan contract has nothing to do with the phone you had. Your contract says you agreed to pay the data plan for 2-yrs, then you have to pay for 2 yrs or face an early termination fee (few hundred dollars). Why would your phone have anything to do with that?

Well that was my understanding, but some people we're saying that if you broke your iPhone and just switched to an older phone, you can get them to change it. Sounded weird.

I think maybe I misunderstood what you were asking. You are specifically talking about the data portion of the plan?

So you would switch to a non-smartphone and keep the contract but not the data portion of it?

I"m not sure how AT&T does it but I think you could do it on VZW.

Sorry, yes, just cancel the data portion. Like if I started using my old razor after I lost/broke my iphone.

I'm pretty sure that you can do it as well. In fact, I know of one co-worker who had a 3G iPhone, decided he didn't like it, Ebay'd it, got a different phone (a Samsung Blackjack I think) and then called up AT&T and changed his data plan to a lower priced data plan. He didn't cancel his data plan though, but I think he could have.
